Did someone ever saw this movie? It is a very old movie, 1945, made by a good French director, Christian-Jaque- My god, I love this movie that I have to see almost once a year. The movie is based on a two short stories by Maupassant.

I love this movie because it talks about a subject that I think is fascinating: war. But other subjects are in the movie: it is a strong critic of the French elite, la bourgeoisie française. And a critic of how French people (or the French nation) accepted the dominance of Nazism. Even if the movie is a recreation of another war, the war with the Prussians, the message is clear.

This movie is also very subtle. And comic even if the subject and some scenes are hard and sad. There are three very interesting characters in this movie: the woman, Boule de Suif, that is the only one to confront the Germans. The artist, who is a freethinker and the Prussian lieutenant who is a psychopath. This character is play by a very good french actor, in fact an excellent actor: Louis Salou. (He committed suicide in 1948.)

The dialogues in the movie were written by a genius: Henri Jeanson. It is a really pleasure to listen to the words of this movie, the subtleties, the ironies...

I love this movie because the story of it is also our story: the same gangs of criminals, the war, the elite, the freethinkers confronted with the ignorance and stupidity and the courage of a few, in this case a woman. It is a classic, courageous movie that was presented just at the end of the war and it is a strong critic of the French complicity with the invaders.
