Another plane crash.

Seven people were killed after an airplane crashed during the Shoreham Airshow, in Brighton, Saturday. The plane hit several cars after a malfunction occurred after an aerobatic manoeuvre.

The crashed plane, a single-seater WWII fighter Hawker Hunter, was performing a loop the loop which led to complication, leading the plane to crash into cars on a nearby road.

Seven people have been killed after a fighter jet taking part in an air show crashed on to a busy A-road on Saturday afternoon.

Sussex police said the Hawker Hunter hit four cars on the A27 just north of Shoreham airport, where the Royal Air Forces Association air show was being held.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said seven people were declared dead at the scene and one person with life-threatening injuries was taken to the Royal Sussex County hospital in Brighton.

A further 14 people were treated for minor injuries. Unconfirmed reports said that two cyclists were killed in the crash. Nobody at the air show site itself is believed to have been injured.

The vintage Hawker Hunter single-seat fighter jet was attempting a loop manoeuvre, but the pilot reportedly failed to pull out. One eyewitness said that the pilot did not eject before the plane hit the ground. The wrecked plane came to rest in a bush.

The Hawker Hunter was listed in the air show programme as being flown by former RAF Harrier pilot Andy ‘Hilz’ Hill, whose day job is as an Airbus captain for a major airline. Hill, who is well known for his aerobatic and air show display work, is described by those in the industry as “a very experienced formation instructor and display pilot”.

Drivers on the A27 at the time of the incident tweeted pictures of the scene:

Dom Lawson was driving on the A27 when the jet crashed. “If I’d been 20 seconds faster I would not be having this conversation,” he said. He described how the plane passed just a few metres above his car with a deafening roar before slamming into the ground in a fireball just five or six vehicles in front. “It was like something out of Die Hard,” he added.

Lawson said he saw at least two cars on fire but added that the incident could have been much worse if traffic lights at a nearby junction had not been at red.

Lucy Pearce, head of content at the Brighton Argus, was at the air show. “All of a sudden there were all these gasps and screams and everyone jumped up. Then there was masses of smoke,” she told the newspaper.

Thousands of spectators were unable to leave the airport because the A27 was closed. Drivers on the road at the time of the accident tweeted pictures of the scene.

Organisers of the Shoreham air show tweeted: “There has been a major incident outside the airfield boundary. The emergency services are responding. Updates will follow when available.”

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch spokesman said it would be deploying a team to investigate.

Laura Raymond, a presenter for the local Splash FM radio station, said that a “couple of planes” were taking part in a jet display when one appeared to fly too close to the ground before onlookers saw a “huge ball of fire and black smoke”.

She told Sky News: “The Hawker Hunter T-7 display was under way. Within seconds we were thinking, ‘Gosh, that plane is going rather low’. There was a ball of fire: we didn’t even hear an impact, and then plumes of black smoke.”

David Bryson, who was watching the air show from Mill Hill, north of the airfield, said: “It was shocking – an awful thing to see. The plane was flying low, as is typical for an air show.

“The pilot pulled up to do a loop and as he came down and pulled up to recover the loop it became obvious he wouldn’t manage to recover it. The jet pulled to the right and hit the road near the traffic lights. The plane was intact when it hit the ground but it then exploded. It was awful.”

Tina Tilley, chief executive of Worthing and Adur chamber of commerce, saw the crash from the VIP area at the show. “From where we were we could see the jet came down very low and looked like it was going to scoop up – but it didn’t.

“There were flames and we knew it was right on the A27. Everyone was horrified and there were people crying. It’s horrendously sad for the families of everyone involved.”

Shoreham resident Dave Penwarden, 51, said he saw the plane explode in a “massive fireball”.

“The plane was coming out of a loop-the-loop, it was fairly low,” he said. “It just didn’t seem to have enough speed to come out of the loop, instead of powering out it dropped too fast and hit the ground.

“There was a massive fireball and an awful lot of smoke. Afterwards there was a stunned silence. Everyone just went quiet.”

Two planes have collided at an airshow in Dittingen in Switzerland’s Basel canton. Swiss police said one of the pilots was killed in the incident. The second one was reported to have ejected and parachuted to safety.

The incident happened during a formation aerobatics demonstration, local media said. One of the planes struck the other from above.

The planes involved in the crash are Ikarus C42s belonging to the German aerobatics Grasshoppers team, which includes three amateur pilots. The team is not to be confused with the Dutch Royal Air Force display team of the same name.

The death of the pilot was announced to the public at the show. After a minute of silence the remaining part of the airshow program was cancelled.

The incident on Sunday in Switzerland follows a more serious and fatal crash at the Shoreham Airshow in Britain on Saturday. The military jet’s impact killed seven motorists on the ground and injured 14 others. The pilot was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Another incident happened at the Dittingen airshow two years ago
, when a Swedish pilot failed to handle the wind and crash-landed his Blériot XI, a replica of the French aircraft famous for being the first plane to cross the English Channel in 1909. The pilot sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Plane practicing for New York Air Show crashes in Orange County, killing pilot

Updated 8 mins ago
NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. (WABC) --
A plane crashed during practice Friday for the New York Air Show this weekend, killing the pilot.

It happened at about 2 p.m. near Stewart International Airport in New Windsor in Orange County.

Benjamin Granucci, a photographer taking photos at the time of the crash, described what he saw on Twitter:

In the photo that is posted above, Granucci said it shows the tail of the plane missing.

Orange County's Department of Emergency Services confirmed that there was a fatal accident involving a single-engine plane crashed while practicing for the New York Air Show. We're told the pilot is the one who died.

Here's what the FAA said in a statement:
"A Cornell W F/Sahakian JA Jr. Giles G 202 experimental aircraft crashed shortly after it departed from Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, NY at about 2 p.m. today. Check with local authorities on the condition of the pilot, the only person onboard. The pilot of the aircraft was scheduled to participate in an airshow at Stewart Airport this weekend. The FAA will investigate and the NTSB will determine probable cause.

Cornell W F/Sahkian JA Jr is the aircraft manufacturer; the Giles G 202 is the aircraft model."

County officials said practice for the day has been canceled, and that the air show is still planned to carry on as scheduled Saturday and Sunday.

Other journalists here with me are saying that part of the tail broke off. #NYAScrash

What I saw was the aircraft come in for a dive. As it pulled up, it suddenly crossed the crowd line and spun towards the ground.

The rear stabilizer/rudder is evidently gone. Aerobatic airplanes are built to withstand huge g-loads on their wings and empennage. Pulling up from the dive, the g-load was likely too much - Structural failure.
Off topic, I notice the elliptic speck in the upper right part of the picture.

It reminds me of a fatal accident that happened on 8th of August near Moscow. Hydroplane and helicopter collided above water, and later 8 bodies were recovered. As the article below says, according to the witnesses, the pilot of the hydroplane behaved very erratically even hours before the accident. He was doing all kind of maneuvers that people thought were totally crazy. Apparently he also didn't file his flight plan. But reports also indicated that both him and the helicopter pilot were very experienced in flying, so there were still questions how something like this could happen.

On Saturday evening, a Cessna hydroplane and a Robinson helicopter collided in the air above Istrinskoye water reservoir near Moscow. Two two aircraft fell apart and collapsed into the water.

A man who eye-witnessed the event, said that it was the pilot of the hydroplane that was trying to perform a dangerous maneuver in the air and struck the rotor of the helicopter. According to the eyewitness, it was the pilot of the hydroplane who was guilty of the air crash.

Sergei Plekhanov, an instructor at paragliding club "Free Fly Team," said that the hydroplane was flying behind the helicopter. The pilot of the helicopter could not see the hydroplane that was flying behind at a higher altitude. The collision occurred at the moment when the two aircraft were on one and the same route.

After the collision, rescuers recovered the bodies of eight people who were on board the two aircraft. Two of the victims are children.

Alexander Khrustalev, the chairman of the board of directors of Heliport of Russia, told Pravda.Ru that both the hydroplane and the helicopter were private aircraft.

"The helicopter and the hydroplane were private aircraft, but the helicopter was conducting its flight in accordance with the law. The route of the helicopter had been coordinated accordingly. The hydroplane appeared unexpectedly, no one has seen it there before," Alexander Khrustalev said. The pilot of the helicopter had no chance to avoid the collision, the expert added, because the pilot of the helicopter could not see the hydroplane approaching from behind.

And here's another one.

Plane crashes at Austrian airshow, pilot killed

A pilot has been killed after losing control of a small plane in Austria, the latest in a string of fatal incidents that have plagued airshows this summer.
The 50-year-old pilot was attempting to complete a loop in front of an audience of 500 people at the Friesach-Hirt air show in Carinthia in Austria when he crashed, according police spokesman Markus Dexl, who spoke with the Austria Press Agency. The pilot died from his injuries before he could be taken to the hospital.

No one else was hurt in the incident, but the remainder of the flying festival was abandoned.

This is the sixth fatal incident at airshows this month. The most serious occurred during the Shoreham air show in the UK, where a vintage Hawker Hunter plane crashed into a busy road following a failed maneuver, killing 11 people. There have also been fatalities in Germany, Russia and the US.

Save for later

A pilot has died following a light aircraft collision in the same field in which Ukip leader Nigel Farage suffered severe injuries in another crash.

The incident took place just past noon on Friday at Hinton-in-the-Hedges airfield in south Northamptonshire.

A spokesman for East Midlands ambulance service said it responded to a call and was on the scene within minutes, immediately calling for back-up from the air ambulance. He added: “Our crews provided care to a male patient on scene with serious injuries. He was not conveyed to hospital.”

The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an investigation into the matter and will be supported by Northamptonshire police.

Farage had to be pulled from the crushed cockpit of a propeller plane after an election banner caused it to crash in May 2010.

The PZL-104 Wilga 35A light aircraft came down after the tow line for the sign became wrapped around the tailplane, an investigation by the AAIB found.

Farage, who was standing in the general election that month – ultimately unsuccessfully – against the Commons Speaker John Bercow in the constituency of Buckingham, suffered broken ribs, bruised lungs and facial injuries. He was treated at John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford and said afterwards: “I must be the luckiest man alive.”

The pilot, Justin Adams, was also seriously injured and was trapped in the wreckage of the aircraft by a foot until freed by firefighters, the report said.
