BT phone charges

If your a UK resident using BT just for line rental, choosing another call provider for cheaper calls, then it might be worth checking your bills. A little scam they are trying to pull is BT 'Privacy at Home', basically its caller display.

"BT Privacy at Home let's you gives you more control over incoming calls. It includes Caller Display, which lets you see the number of the person that's calling, so you can decide whether to answer. Caller Display is FREE as part of BT Privacy at Home."

Here's the con.

"From 1st October 2006 customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display.

Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost, if the following calls are made. Customers who bill monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £1.75 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who bill every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £5.25 a quarter.

So, if you’re using another call provider you'd have to use the prefix 1280 before 6 calls a quarter, or 3 calls a month to escape the charge depending on your billing arrangement. That’s presuming you even know about the charge in the first place. From what I’ve heard the charge is being made with no reference to 'caller display' or 'Privacy at home', but when challenged about the fee they have been refunding them if you complain.

Forget caller display for who's calling, we should be able to get caller display for who's listening! :D
