Buckwheat in Portugal

Hi.

I was wondering if there is any Portuguese forumites around that can help me find buckwheat in Portugal. I have been searching for the stuff without any results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Green Manalishi,

Last Christmas when I went back home (Portugal) I had the same problem. I was told to try to get it at major supermarkets like Continente, Feira Nova and so on. Other possibility is to give it a shot at health shops and vegetarian focused shops. Because I was constrained by time, I didn't really look for it any further then a local dietary shop and Continente, both without luck.
I actually used to buy it about 10 years ago, at a small health shop in Porto. I'm not sure of where you are based though.

In case you're not aware, buckwheat in Portuguese is "trigo sarraceno".

Sorry that I couldn't be of any further help.

Hi Gertrudes.

I have also looked around big supermarkets and online health/dietary shops, but nothing.

Currently i'm actually near Porto, do you remember where the shop was?

I remember that it was near Mercado do Bolhão. I can't remember in which street, but it was definitely very close to it.
I don't know if the shop still exists though, it has been a long time now.

Have you also checked online? If you can't find it in Portugal, it might be easier to look for buckwheat (in english) and order it from a place that ships to Portugal. Some places ship worldwide, like iherb.com for example. They also have buckwheat, they ship to Portugal, and are usually very good with deliveries. I live in UK at the moment, and usually order supplements from them, it takes about 2 or 3 days for them to get here from the US.

Hope that helps

If there are around here any more Portuguese members, i found a website from where it is possible to buy buckwheat, quinoa, etc...

This company distributes to stores all over the country. In the site there exists a list of shops where hopefully (hopefully, because i am still to look for some around where i live, don't know to what extent the list is updated) one can buy without ordering from the internet.

Try to look for local "Russian groceries" stores. Buckwheat is basic food for Russians, so there is a very high chance that you'll be able to find it there, or it could be ordered for you. Israel also doesn't have buckwheat in their major supermarkets, it can be found only in health food stores or Russian ones (that's also where you can find delicious and non-kosher bacon. ;) ).

Added: Try to look for the chain called "Myst-Market". They have several stores in Portugal. Here are the details of the one in Porto:

Rua Ricardo Jorge, Nº 39 B, R/C
Tlm.: 967594876

Maybe they can give you details about their other stores in the area.

Here is another Russian chain in Porto called "Troika":

Rua do Almada 314 Porto
Тел. +351 222 010 119

Here is also a list of cities where you can find Russian stores and chains in Portugal. It is in Russian, but cities names, addresses and phone numbers are readable. One of them even specifically mentioned buckwheat ("grechka" in Russian).

Just a note that when I went to Portugal this Christmas I found buckwheat at a few places. I was very surprised as I don't recall it being so easily found.

Here are two places where you can find them:

Buckwheat groats: at supermarket Modelo (very close to Fnac) in Norteshopping.
Buckwheat groats and buckwheat flower: at a health food shop called Celeiro directly in front of Continente at Centro Comercial Dolce Vita, in Antas.

Thanks for the indications. I went to the norteshopping supermarket, but it was out of stock, and had already gone to Dolce Vita in Antas looking for that shop but i didn't found it  .

But i already found it on other places and already started to experiment with it. Made a banana buckwheat cake as indicated in a thread in the recipes area. It turned out eatable, but in need of some fine tunings the next time i make one.
