Can carbs make you vomit?

We started eating ketagenic as a family a week ago. We have stuck to it really strictly.Yesterday evening, I was out running errands and got thirsty, the gas station I stopped at was out of bottled water. Now, I live in the middle of nowhere, if i had waited to get something at the next place, it would have been another hour. So I choose one of those bottled fruit/veggie smoothie things. it was all spinach, kale, banana, and apple. The worst thing in it was added artichoke powder (which I know is on the no-no list). By the time i got home, I was shaking and utterly burning up. It felt like heat was just pouring off of me. I started vomiting and couldn't stop for hours. I don't know if it was the smoothie thing, or if I've unknowingly done something else. I never throw up. Ever. I never even had morning sickness with any of my kids. What a horrible experience. The heat thing too....that was weird. Has anyone else had this happen when they started? Or any advice? I've tried searching on here, but I'm not finding anything.

Hard to say, but it sounds more like the smoothie had gone bad and your reaction was from spoiled ingredients. Some on the ketogenic diet have reported, that when they occasionally have a lots of carbs they don't sleep well, and I've notice the same thing. The few times I've took too many carbs, I've also had some nervousness and brain fog, but never the things you describe. However, since you've only been a week on the new diet, I think that it's possible that your system is in a fragile condition. It usually takes several weeks, months, even up to a year to the body functions to stabilize after switching to the ketogenic diet.

I do hope you've read the related thread, articles, and some books about the ketogenic diet. There are things you need to implement and apply in the beginning of the keto-diet in order to avoid problems.

Or there was something particularly vile in the smoothie.

But being keto for just one week doesn't really give the body time to upregulate DNA, so Aragorn is right, the smoothie may have been bad and I would be taking it up with the store/distributor/manufacturer.

Do read the keto diet thread carefully before making significant changes in your diet!

We had to change very few things to switch to Ketogenic. One person in the house has a gluten intolerance and one is allergic to milk. And I'm one of those strict moms that doesn't really let anything sugary, processed, or artificially processed into the house. So most of the things on keto we were already doing out of habit.

We were just discussing yesterday morning that it seems to be doing something rather quickly with us. Skin rashes have disappeared. Moods have improved. And weirdly, Ive noticed everyone seems brighter around the eyes.

Last night was just awful. My fiance drank a portion of the same smoothie I drank.....and he was fine! (not fair right? lol) So I am baffled as to why it did that to me and not him.

Well, I guess it could have been a number of other things that caused the reaction, not the smoothie. An unknown food sensitivity, allergy, virus, bacteria, gluten etc.

You know, even if you're well prepared in many ways for the diet change - as you say, eating healthy, little or no gluten and milk - changing to a ketogenic diet (that means hardly no carbs at all) WILL reset your body in many ways. It is a big shock to anyone's body. So, just be careful and vigilant, problems might arise (like fatigue, muscle weakness, headaches) in the next couple of weeks. You might need the correct supplements/nutrients to alleviate the symptoms. For some people, especially younger ones, the transition seems to be easier. For really old ones, it can be too much and even dangerous.

Fingers crossed that things go smoothly for ya' :)

People have different tolerance levels and 'hardiness' of their gut floras. It could be that your fiance's gut terrain was not bothered by the smoothie. Or, maybe he drank less than you did?

On a side note, if y'all suspected that the smoothie was bad, why would your fiance drink some after it made you sick? :P

Supplements can definitely make you [wanna] throw up, especially when having a sensitive stomach and the capsules / softgels contain lots of veggie-powder/extract types, berries. Once in 2012 I tried spinach - IIRC - mixed with scrambled eggs and I had the same reaction as you had, albeit not for hours. :)

Glad to hear that you and your family are experiencing improvements already after the first week. I also noticed a net reduction in skin rashes and fatigue shortly after transitioning and used to have pretty big mood swings which disappeared quickly after going keto.

Eating carbs never gave me that sensation. Your reaction does actually remind me of when I used to take Spirulina with a big glass of water. It would give me a very odd feeling in the stomach and I was close to throwing up on a few occasions, but the sensation was usually short lasting, so it could have been any number of things in your case. FWIW.

I've vomited a few times, all from eating too much fat and then accidentally / ignorantly too many carbs.

The body wants one or the other, not both.

Well I think I understand what has happened. I think we just got to the "keto flu" "paleo flu" part of switching over.....and right around that time I decided to down a drink full of carbs. I drank most of the smoothie, he just had the last part That I couldn't finish. Both myself, my fiancé, and our teenage daughter are feeling the muscle aches, tiredness, etc. ugh. I am sticking to my water and morning cup of coffee and that's it for now. I do have a pot full of bone broth cooking up in the slow cooker to help us out a bit. The young kids seem totally fine with the adjustment. They are actually full of more energy, better behavior, and all bright eyed. I May be a tad jealous! ;) lol
