Why does President Bush hope Christmas comes a little late this year? Because on Jan. 23, Canada may elect the most pro-American leader in the Western world. Free-market economist Stephen Harper, leader of the opposition Conservative Party, is pro-free trade, pro-Iraq war, anti-Kyoto, and socially conservative. Move over Tony Blair: If elected, Mr. Harper will quickly become Mr. Bush's new best friend internationally and the poster boy for his ideal foreign leader....

WASHINGTON (CP) — The White House offered congratulations to Stephen Harper and the Conservatives on Tuesday as the U.S. administration looked for a positive shift in dealings with Canada. [...]

U.S. media organizations, which watched the race more closely than usual as Harper's fortunes began to rise, gave the election a lot of play and emphasized the win will open a new chapter between the two countries.

The Washington Post, in a front-page story, said the party is ``likely to steer a path closer to the United States," while the New York Times called it a "striking turn" in Canada's politics that's "likely to improve relations." [...]

Bad news for Canadians and the world. True it is a minority government, but that still leaves them plenty of room to slip in disaster if Canadians remain unaware. I noticed supposedly liberal columnists in the major media saying, and bloggers consoling themselves with, it won't be so bad, it's just a minority government. Just go back to sleep.
