Career???

Menna

The Living Force
What is the best way to choose a career? I am at a time in my life where I have to make a decision. I am staring at the fork in the road and before I go left or right I would like to gather the best information to make an educated decision. I recently graduated with my Masters of Science degree in Sport Business Management/Physical Education and I also received a bachelor of Science degree in Movement and Sport Studies/Physical Education K-12.

I am currently 25 years old and I have never had a career and now is the time to chose a path.

What I want to know is how have my fellow forum members picked the career that they are in? What helped you make the final decision? Thanks for your help.

I know one of the answers I will get is "know thy self" I am working on that ;)

Hi Menna,
I recently took the COPS (Career Occupational Preference Survey) survey to help me determine which type of careers I would be interested in. I was skeptical at first but it was actually pretty accurate. Maybe a survey like this would be helpful for you.

Thanks for the link Masamune! Both of my boys are trying to pick careers. The oldest has been spending time at our local hospital observing before he makes his final decision. The younger, has no idea yet....maybe this link will help him sort it out! Thanks again.

p.s. are you also a michigander Masamune? if you don't mind me asking? I'm not too far from Grand Rapids.

Hello Galahad I am interested in exercise and nutrition also coaching and helping others be healthy. I have been applying for health and wellness coaching jobs but no response so far. I guess I have to expand my search and look down some other avenues.

Hi LissyLou,
Actually no. Unfortunately I am much closer to the Gulf of Mexico than I would like. :/ I just searched for the COPS test and this page was at the top. It seemed to have some good information and various tests that may be helpful to Menna so I posted it. ;)

Masamune, thanks for answering. I thought we may be close neighbors. Sorry to hear you are close to the Gulf, although, the way things are going, doesn't matter where you are, we are all going to be affected in some way.

Thanks again for link.

G'day Menna!

How did I arrive at career/job satisfaction? It was a long and tortuous path for me. I left school at 16, traveled a lot and have dozens of jobs in four different countries. Most were crappy, infested with petty tyrants but very interesting and educational and I always got by.

The reason my 'career' was so convoluted was that all my life I was plagued by 'abduction experiences' all my life with the result that from age 13 to 30 I was more or less utterly miserable and unable to focus on things. I thought I was going mad and even though intelligent enough ended up doing low paid crappy work. In the Wave series it mentions that one of the purposes of abduction was to keep you inhibited and so forth, in my experience that's spot on. After age 30 when the abductions didn't work as well they sent a vector. Which I fell for hook, line and sinker! That's being dealt with now.

It wasn't until I was 42 that I actually became a 'professional', a professional firefighter and rescue operator. At 44 I became an ambulance officer. I'm doing well at all and love my work.

What I'm saying is that I don't know what's best for you but it's never too late, you're young, intelligent, got a positive mindset, you'll be OK. Maybe start off with what you've been trained to do and see how it goes. Perhaps you could even use your degree to get a job overseas. That's always interesting.

Take care and good luck.

Hi Menna,

Based on your studies, have you considered being a Phys Ed teacher? It sounds like you are more than qualified for that. I did some sub-teaching a few years ago and enjoyed it. Never a dull moment with 20-30 students! If you are unsure if you want to be a teacher, you can go to your local school districts Admin Office and apply as a sub. This requires a background check, finger prints and a bachelors degree in any subject. And btw, now is the time to apply for the next school year.

The pay isn't bad, our district pays $80/day for short term. $90/day if you sub more than 1 week in the same class. And it's a short day - usually 6 hours, with a planning hour and a lunch. I had lots of free time. So maybe you can get your feet wet as a teacher and see if its something you'd enjoy, before firmly deciding?

Hope this helps.
