cassiopedia sitemap

I was wondering if a sitemap for cassiopedia was ever submitted to search engines.
It seems the site is quite relevant as far as content from a search engine point of view, but I don't see any first page search results necessarily for keywords that are on the site.

Maybe MediaWiki takes care of this automatically?

There's various gizmo's that will trawl the site and create one. Our resident Techie experts will know.

You'd essentially use a tool to make it for you:
_https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/sitemap-generator.html

There are also websites specifically set up to do it more automatically that you can find by doing a web search on "sitemap"

Wordpress for example has a plugin that takes care of all that. I'm not sure about the MediaWiki platform that cassiopedia is built upon.

Essentially a XML file is created that contains information about the site in question and it sit in the root directory of the website. Web spiders will crawl the website, find it and parse it.

If version >= 1.6 (can't see, because page Special:Version returns an error)
_http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:GenerateSitemap.php
Otherwise
_http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ManualSitemap

SMF itself has a mod that can be used to generate a sitemap and it is compatible with version 1.1.8 which this forum is using.

Added later:- Apologies. Just re-read Domi's first post and noted that the sitemap is for Cassiopedia and not for this forum.

Hello,

What kind of keywords were you hoping Sott would be ranked for?

Sitemaps work in tandem with incoming links.

Basically the more a bot comes back from a certain search engine, it will spider your site deeper and deeper.

It is quite easy to get a spider to come back to your site with the use of social bookmarking sites.

All a sitemap really does it show the search engine pages on your site that may be deep linked for instance an article written 2 months ago would not be linked from the front page and therefore a spider may or may not find it.

However remember that because Sott uses a lot news from sources that published the information first it is unlikely you will be ranked for those keywords unless you added enough commentary where the content may become unique again.

Hope i did not muddy the water but basically a site map can help get your site indexed in the search engines more fully though it does not mean you will be ranked in the top 10 for those keywords.

If you do decide to make a site map for ranking purposes i can get the links back to the site needed so that the spiders will follow the information often with social bookmarking systems i already have set up.

You could search your own raw server logs if you wanted to see what kind of pages are currently getting ranked with no active effort and lots of other useful information.

I think a sitemap would actually be more useful for humans to browse than the bots though, would be easier to view past articles.

My posting is about cassiopedia, not sott.
Sott is pretty search engine friendly.

I just noticed that when I did a search for some terminology that is in the glossary (cassiopedia) that the old website comes up instead of the newer site.

Also I have been doing keyword research and seo (search engine optimization) lately so I tend to notice un-optimized websites now.

I am using the term "sitemap" in the context of an xml file that is generated that can be submitted to search engines.
You're right that it helps search engines get a better idea of deeper links.

Laura and team have done very well with all the unique content that is generated. Case in point is the keyword "psychopath" where Laura's articles rank on the front page of results.
I am merely looking at small things that can be done to optimize things more.

Hi Domi,

Sorry for getting technical but it's my day job :)

A Sitemap is a good idea especially for a big site like this, there is no harm in adding it, if you need help on the technical side in regards to helping the site get more visibility i will be happy to help.

The Sitemap can easily be generated automatically and then i can assist with sending the spiders to view the site multiple times a day.

Submitting a sitemap directly to search engines can take months in the queue, its a lot faster to get backlinks from popular sites.

Feel free to PM/E-mail me if you need help.
