My mom picked this book up in my home-town's gluten-free store last weekend, and highly recommends it -- I know Laura and the moderators with backgrounds in medicine may have already read it, but I did a search and didn't see it pop up. Although I haven't read it myself yet, I can recommend it because my mom has been taking notes on one chapter each day and sending them to me.

I also wanted to give a brief testimonial (I shudder at that word because it seems like church jargon to me, but I can't think of a better one) and say thanks to Laura and everyone else who has been doing the research on this and pushing it so hard here. My dad has a family email list for all of the relatives on his side of the family, both close and distant, and he sends various things out from time to time. My mom sent a message out to the list telling them that I had discovered that I am sensitive to gluten and dairy, and that by cutting them out of my diet, I had started to take care of a skin condition. Since she knew that several of my paternal relatives had various digestive tract problems, and also remembered that when my paternal grandmother had visited years ago, she ate a diet consisting of only rice, pears, and hamburger (which my mom thought was really odd at the time, but realizes in hindsight that it completely avoided gluten and dairy), she also sent a copy of her initial notes on the book above.

After doing this, email started coming in regularly from all over the country from all kinds of relatives about how they either have problems with, suspect they have problems with, or are just now figuring out that they are gluten intolerant. My parents have gotten about four emails a day for the past four days from family members telling their stories about themselves, their parents, and their kids (even one baby who apparently acts differently after his mom eats gluten and then nurses), and they are all asking for notes from this book and a couple have even suggested starting to trade gluten-free recipes. It all really came out of left field, but apparently there is a real need out there for this information and all kinds of people (and in my family, I really mean all kinds!) can benefit from it.

I just wanted to mention this anecdote (hope this thread is as good as any), since this is the first time that information I've drawn from this forum has directly impacted anyone outside of my immediate family, and I think its a really good example of the kind of effect all sorts of things we do here might have in the future. I'm also planning on buying a copy of the Detoxification and Healing book that Laura has been mentioning lately for my mom, since she is showing such initiative with diet. So thanks again Laura and everyone else who is getting this information out :)
