Celtic costumes for maze dance?

Adaryn

The Living Force
I was browsing the Web, searching for celtic / medieval costumes which would make nice outfits for the Maze dance (yeah, the dance isn't established yet, but that should come soon, right? :cool2:):

Q: (L) Okay. So what should we do next? I mean, we haven't yet been able to take the time and effort and whatever to put dances together and I dunno if, ya know...

A: Wait for the dances. There are going to be some breakthroughs among the practitioners within the next two months. Then will be time enough to think about dancing.

I found this page which has about 100 pictures of really nice costumes. Thought I'd throw it out there, in case it inspires some of our clothes designers/creators or some of our dancers here :D

Ooh that's lovely - Assume that it can be purchased??...because it could take a year to make!!! BTW - did a little history research on early Irish/Gaelic costumes and found this:

Lots of interesting info and historical references ...

Nope they're not to sale, it's just a photo gallery. But one can find these type of clothes on online specialised stores (medieval, fantasy, etc. stuff), though much less elaborated and "authentic" IMO.
I don't think the designs have to be that complicated and refined. It was just to give an idea, and a treat for the eyes, too

Indeed, very interesting…

Well, we've been giving it some thought once in awhile and our ideas are for very simple silk dresses/tunics and pants. I'll see if I can whip something up and get one of the girls to model it and take a photo.

From the above page, there is one item that is close:

It could be worn with this vest: http://album.aufeminin.com/album/see_167912_106/Maureen-et-Eileen.html

It could be long, or tunic length for ladies, and if tunic length, worn over loose, flowing pants - like harem pants.

For men, a tunic like the above for women, only worn with a man's vest and pants.

Of course, there ARE kilts... and Joe has been known to wear one now and again.

A nice resource for sewing patterns, both us and euro is here: http://www.sewingpatterns.com/index.php

A basic t-tunic, pant, and vest pattern combo would work I think. :) Harem pants are very easy to sew. Vests and tunics take a little skill but are still not hard. Look for a pattern that can be sized up and down easily. Some of the costume patterns for whole families would work. I've seen a few for pirate costumes that would be great once simplified.

Pattern companies I've used that have good instructions are Kwik Sew and Simplicity. Burda is also good.

Happy sewing!

A resource for affordable silk here: http://www.dharmatrading.com/

The raw silk or noil, would work well. :D

I'm curious as to how the attire worn while dancing matters other than silk for additional EM protection. I don't recall seeing any mention of the type of clothing in the transcripts or other discussions. Is it to get more into the gaiety of things, or more comfort while dancing? Or is there some deeper reason?

Whoo hoo! I was hoping we'd get to this part eventually. I've done lots of costume work (ballet and renaissency-type stuff) and sewing for highland dance. I can't tell you how many of these

http://album.aufeminin.com/album/see_167912_106/Maureen-et-Eileen.html

I've made over the years! Could do it in my sleep! They are usually made with cotton velvet and a special metallic ribbon for decorating highland vests. Silk and a silk lining would make something really special. The tunic looks simple and gorgeous to wear. The pattern can be embroidered on, or I once came up with a foiling technique which worked very well for highland choreography.

This will be so fun!!

Does it make a difference what is being worn when it comes to the dancing (other than making it easier to move :) )? I do not recall any discussion previously in regards to this.
