The Living Force
This is the 1st time I've posted from a mobile device, so I hope it works.
Believe it or not, the bulk of the reading I have done on both the Cassiopaea and SOTT websites over the last few years has been done on a BlackBerry, usually with the graphics turned off to shorten the time it takes to load a page and reduce bandwidth usage. The handiness of a wireless device allows me to read the forum and web pages in bursts throughout the day, like when I go out for a smoke, instead of only being able to read when I am in front of my computer with sufficient time and energy to dedicate.
In comparing the difference between the appearance of the forum on a regular computer and a mobile device, I noticed a few important features missing when viewing with a mobile device - a BlackBerry in my case.
Here's a brief list of some of the things I really miss when using my BlackBerry (regardless of whether graphics are on or off, or what emulation mode or style media type I select):
- search function
- hyperlinks:
- inside posts to other posts, websites, etc.
- under username of poster to view their profile
- to user profile
- time and date stamps for posts
I'm hoping that adding these functions is as simple as editing the Media Type, handheld section of a cascading style sheet (CSS) or a template file for pages delivered across the wireless access protocol (WAP). If not, I hope whatever effort might be required proves to be worth the investment. As more and more people are using wireless devices to access the Internet, I believe we will need to strive to provide them with the same level of user experience as would be found using a desktop or laptop computer.
Regards,
Gonzo
