Christmas Carols

While listening to a nice mix of Christmas carols in a doctor's office, I started thinking about how many of the old traditional ones are by deceased singers who are seldom heard other than at Christmas. Will Bing Crosby's White Christmas ever cease to be played at some future holiday season, or Elvis' Blue Christmas? How about Dean Martin, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Karen Carpenter, or Mr. Christmas himself, Andy Williams? Millenials are already stumped as to who Perry Como was as verified by a nurse in that age bracket when I mentioned him.

I was listening to my 27 Xmas CD collection as I got caught up on the latest transcript thread. I stopped a few times as I contemplated whether 6D or DCM are ever moved by the sincere expressions of love/worship sung soulfully from the heart but in the mistaken belief of a Jesus born in a manger to a virgin? I've really had to wrestle w/ my love of Christmas carols w/ my new awareness of Jesus' mythological status. I'm satisfied that Jesus exemplifies the core STO tenets that Julius Caesar brought to bear in his time here that have had lasting impact via the Jesus myth. I just try to concentrate on the lyrics that actually ring true - son of god, the bright star (comet), the new born king (close enough). The Glee Xmas CD reminded me of a more recently deceased singer, Cory Monteith. What a tragic loss as his personal demons cost him his life. Here's the TV rendition of Last Christmas w/ Lea Michele:

A couple of other songs also interrupted my reading as they were just so powerful, the second being The Lord's Prayer as sung by Andrea Bocelli. Tears were rolling down my cheeks - it's just so moving. The next CD was Michael Buble which reminded me of his family health crisis - his 3 yr old son has liver cancer and has undergone the first of four chemotherapy treatments. The Buble family:

Are those not the two sweetest/cutest little boys? Really sad that such a terrible illness has befallen such an adorable child (or really any child period) and I can only hope for a good outcome against all odds. This time of year generates the fund raising commercials for cancer research on TV w/ children bereft of hair used to pull at heartstrings and wallets. If only all those donated $s would actually help these children and their families realize a cure.

I guess that pretty much sums it up on my take of Christmas carols. My daughter has taken a particular liking to the songs in a Charlie Brown Christmas - I have that CD and it's one of my favorites, too. So, I hope all of you are enjoying the songs of the season and will count your blessings and keep those who are having a hard time of it in your thoughts & prayers. And maybe one of these years we will actually have Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men.
