Costco removed tomatoes to save Sarah Palin from possible pelting

Costco customer Helen Rappaport told The Salt Lake Tribune that she couldn't find tomatoes at a warehouse in Salt Lake City last week because, the manager told her, they were taken off shelves while Sarah Palin visited during her book tour.

"It turns out that Palin had been pelted with a tomato at an earlier stop on her book tour and the management at the Costco was determined it wouldn't happen here," the paper said. "The manager told an employee to go into the storage area and get Rappaport some tomatoes, which he gave her for free."

The book tour, which ended this week, included stops at Costco stores in Salt Lake City and Tempe, Ariz.

Update: The Associated Press reported earlier in the week that a man was arrested for throwing a tomato at Palin at the Mall of America in Minnesota. He missed.

Confirmation from Costco, Thursday 2:15 p.m.: Kevin Campbell, who manages the store Palin visited in Salt Lake City, confirmed that it pulled tomatoes off the floor while she was there and put them in a receiving area, then gave them to customers who asked for tomatoes (but not for free). It was in response to the tomato-throwing at the Mall of America earlier in the week. "Our concern was that somebody might want to be a copycat, so we removed that opportunity," Campbell said. "Our intention was to be a good host and make sure we didn't have any similar kinds of events." He added that he doesn't think it's news. "It's ridiculous that it's being reported."[/quote]

 Yep, for the savvy consumer Costco caters to you'd think they'd demonstrate better practical understanding in the policies and information they wield!

Cabbages and onions work as well.

My first reaction was :rotfl:

but after thinking about that i prefer the tomatoes since they are in the nightshade family (not too good for many people) while cabbages and onions are good as food and for our diet. So it would be a waste to use them, then let's go for green pepper or red pepper which are also in the nightshade family (it won't be a loss :D)

How about a plate of ratatouille? Tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers together! :halo:

Though I fear if we take this any further, we'll have the Secret Service down our throats...

What vegetable family are they in?

I dunno. If the idea is to humiliate Palin rather than to physically hurt her, which I would hope was the case, then Cabbages and onions could be a bit of an over the top reaction, unless they were shredded first. :P

But it seems to me that if the manager limited it to hiding the tomatoes just because they were thrown last time, he showed a remarkable limited creative thinking on behalf of himself, and projected that subjective thinking onto everyone else.

Does he believe that tomato throwers steal them off the shelf and are incapable of buying them?
And has he never heard of eggs??

Asteraceae (Jerusalem Artichoke)

I think Laura's referring to the deadly Night Shade family.

I had the same idea, which prevented me from mentioning that Costco carries garden tools...

Just kidding! I would NEVER wish harm on Sarah.
