crashing sounds or a chime when falling asleep

I've had this happen many times where just as I'm about to fall asleep, I hear a noise that brings me right back out wide awake. It started off as a noise that was like someone knocking a toaster off a counter, i.e., a loud crash of something. The crashing appliance sound went on as the theme for a while, then the sound changed and sometimes it was like an alarm chime or bell, 3 beeps. I'd always look at the dogs and cats immediately to see if they had heard anything, nada.
I wonder what on earth that is, something warning me out of sleep or just a symbol of me changing into astral mode or whatever. Hasn't happened much lately but it was very regular for a couple of years.

has anyone ever had that experience or any thoughts? Thank you.

I frequently get a low pitched gong sound that seems to vibrate inside my head. At times it repeats. I always wait for the other shoe to drop, as it were, but nothing happens.
I suspect that others have similar sounds and proddings. The only logical thing to which I can attribute it is some brain racket.
