Ok, so it's not the most dramatic ;) and whether it is related to 'leaking pipes' or not is not mentioned, it's referred to as a 'crater' 'hole' and 'subsidence'

Crater appeared overnight on Tollemache Road in Birkenhead
Motorists were left stunned after part of a busy road in Wirral collapsed.
A deep crevice suddenly appeared on a pedestrian island in the centre of Tollemache Road in Birkenhead late last night.
The council received calls about the hole from around 10pm and sent their contractor out to investigate.
Barriers have been put up around the gap with United Utilities expected to be on site later today to try to get to the bottom of what happened.
A spokeswoman for Wirral council said: "The road at Tollemache Road/St James Road, Birkenhead, has now re-opened after safety checks at a small area of carriageway subsidence.
"We received the call last night and our contractor attended at around 10pm. The road was closed for a short time while safety checks and works were undertaken. The road is now open with barriers around the subsidence.
"United Utilities are expected to attend later today to carry out a CCTV survey."
