This is probably the best film version of Dostojevski's classic I'have ever seen. Excellent cast, great photography and dialogues. Surely a treat.

Raskolnikov: Time to go.

Dounia: To turn yourself in?

Raskolnikov: Yes. But i don't know why.

Dounia: Because by taking your suffering, you'll be taking away half your crime.

Raskolnikov: Crime? Some crime. I killed a filthy old money lender, Dounia. A louse! I'm only going to confess because... I'm a coward. A mediocrity.

A very enjoyable adaptation that really captures the squalour that is evinced in the book, along with the delirium of a tortured soul, combating his predator of self-justification with his desperate need for salvation through confession, his conscience.

I really enjoy Ian McDairmid (the emperor in the Star Wars films) in this also; his portrayal as the kooky eccentric Porfiry Petrovich is a kind of proto-Columbo detective, seemingly bumbling along, playing the fool, all the while a very astute, tactical mind is chipping away at the stone-walling ego of Raskolnikov, patiently awaiting his conscience, for him to turn himself in.

I think we should all learn how to be skilled detectives in this world! ;D
