16 Jan, 2017 - At least 37 people have been killed after a cargo plane belonging to Turkish MyCargo Airlines crashed into a residential neighborhood near Kyrgyzstan’s capital of Bishkek.

Among those killed were four crewmembers, all Turkish nationals, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhammetkaly Abulgaziev.

Abulgaziev added that the recovery workers have found the black box from the crashed jet.

One of the pilots died at the scene of the accident, Kyrgyz Health Ministry spokeswoman Elena Bayalinova said.

The aircraft was operating the flight route TK6491 from Hong Kong to Bishkek, and would have flown on to Istanbul.

Kyrgyzstan's Emergencies Ministry said the plane crashed in a residential neighborhood outside the capital, Bishkek.

The plane crashed 1.5 to 2km from the runway, a source in the Kyrgyz Transport Ministry told Interfax.

At least 32 residential buildings have been destroyed in the crash, the government press service of Kyrgyzstan said, as cited by RIA Novosti.

Firefighters are at the scene, the ministry added, as cited by TASS.

All flights to and from Kyrgyzstan’s Manas airport have been suspended until further notice, RIA Novosti reported, citing local sources.

Kyrgyz PM Sooronbay Jeenbekov has arrived at the crash site, the government's press service told RIA Novosti.

Bishkek resident Zumriyat Rezahanova told RT that her cousin’s house was the first to be hit by the plane.

“Her house was the first. The roof was blown away,” said Rezahanova, adding that the local residents heard a strong boom, and those who were in the house thought it was an earthquake.

Up to 37 people were killed in the crash, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Emergency Situations said, with at least 31 bodies and nine body parts have been uncovered at the crash site.

At the same time, nine injured people, including six children with serious burns, are now in Bishkek hospitals. According to the country’s Health Ministry, the death toll from the tragedy is likely to further increase as rescue works at the crash site continue.

Reasons for the Crash Unclear - The landing of the plane was delayed, according to a representative of Manas airport press service.

“There is still no information on reasons of the plane crash. I can only say that the aircraft was supposed to land later than scheduled,” the representative told RIA Novosti. She refused to comment on the information that the plane was unable to land at the first attempt and tried to perform a second attempt at landing.

In turn, an ACT Airlines official told RIA Novosti in Ankara that the causes of the crash have not yet been established.

Following the crash, Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Muhammetkaly Abulgaziev, Emergencies Minister Kubatbek Boronov and Transport Minister Zhamshitbek Kalilov arrived at the site. Kyrgyzstan’s President Almazbek Atambayev ordered to thoroughly investigate the deadly crash, the presidential press office said, with Abulgaziev to head the government commission while the Russian Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) expressed readiness to join the investigation. “We are waiting for an official invitation [from the Kyrgyz authorities], we will form an investigation commission as soon as we get it,” a representative of the committee told RIA Novosti.

Reports of Fog - The visibility at the moment of landing was poor but “acceptable,” Abulgaziev told journalists as the tragedy was reportedly blamed on a dense fog.

“It [the aircraft] was supposed to refuel in Bishkek. Approximately at 7:07 a.m. (01:07 GMT) it requested permission for landing. Weather conditions allowed [the landing], a passenger plane landed before it, 11 other aircraft, both passenger and cargo [planes], landed at night,” the deputy prime minister said.

According to Abulgaziev, the visibility at the moment of landing reached 325 meters (1,066 feet).

He noted that, according to a suggestion of experts, the plane crew made a mistake when landing by misjudging the distance Condolences Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to the president of Kyrgyzstan in connection with the deadly plane crash. “Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Kyrgyzstan’s President Almazbek Atambayev in connection with numerous human casualties caused by the plane crash on houses near Bishkek. Flight data and voice recorders from the crashed Turkish cargo jet have been flown from Kyrgyzstan to Moscow to be analyzed by a local expert center, a Kyrgyz Emergencies Ministry spokesperson told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

"Black boxes from the plane have been sent to Moscow for analysis," the spokesperson said.

Data from the recorders will be studied by experts from the Moscow-based Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) after its team inspected the crash site on Wednesday.
