Dermoid Cyst

I just found out that my brother's girlfriend had a sonogram and she has a 7 centimeter dermoid cyst on her ovary. Her gynecologist said that it is very rare that this type of cyst is cancerous and recommended that she get it surgically removed.

My brother did some research on the internet, but I'd like to get some feedback if possible, (possibly by Psyche). So if anyone has some info or advise please post it here.

Thanks.

A dermoid cyst (mature cystic teratoma) is benign by definition. Malignant tumors are rare, and benign ones are relatively common within tumors derived from germinal cells (i.e. dermoid cysts). They could identify a malignant type by CT scan or MRI, but traditionally they use only ultrasound. Dermoid cysts are usually very identifiable with diagnostic tests like ultrasound. A biopsy and histological analysis of the tumor will give the final diagnosis. If there is a chance this tumor is malignant, it has to be removed. If it's giving her symptoms like pain, IMO it is best to remove it as well.

My 2 cents.
