Do I fit into this forum?

I have chosen to live on a new, budding homestead with my husband, as of Oct. '09. It's somewhat remote and very beautiful and quiet. We are growing veggies. No neighbors that really know the extent of how much the system is falling apart, but one neighbor who we can get help from. Other neighbors are curious about what we are doing and come by to check us out. We are not set up to help others security-wise yet.
We want to be set up to help others by next year...food-wise, sharing land, as a retreat, etc. All neighbors are not yet awake.
We want a real community/landshare as I stated in my intro as a newbie. If people we share our 35 acres with eventually come from this forum, all the better, because this forum and FOTCM principles are quite resonate with us. Trust can be built. Relationships formed!

Work is still scarce in our area, but getting a little better as weather warms up. I come into town to go online or for work.
I get eye fatigue from trying to read one Chapt from the Wave, and then the forum online. At this time/season, I am only online one day, maybe two a week, for maximum 3 hours one day...as much as my eyes can take it. Printing out a chapter is an option when I have extra cash, as its 20 cents a page here at the library. Those chapters are long, as you know!!
We have no electricity yet on our homestead. Soon we will but only enough for the fridge, a lightbulb, electric burners for cooking. No money for internet service, much less a laptop. Some kind of windfall could change all this, but not counting on it! HA!
This forum community seems to be soley based on being online everyday or often if possible. What about myself and any others who are not able to be online frequently in order to advance within the fellowship? In order to go to next level? In order to interact?
There are numerous homesteaders out here in our area of southern Colorado...wanting to set themselves up and sometimes try to connect with neighbors, but everyone is still thinking in an atomized fashion (self sufficient, do everything yourself, and shame if you have to ask for help!)

Believe me, this forum is now my only source of like-minded (principles) community, which I am starving for. Coming into the town near us for socialization does nothing for me. There is no one to talk to about all this. A whole lot of density in the small towns around here. No judgment, just the facts. No one wants to hear any information. I take that back--one person just asked me TODAY about The Wave based on something he heard me say to my husband once. I must celebrate! He also is on a homestead, an out-of-the-box person all his life, and does not have a computer, nor much money. I suggested getting The WaveSeries books. He may be able to gradually afford that. He suggested splitting the cost and we wondered if we can get a discount (some help.) I do not use credit cards.
I would like to ask FOTCM for help in getting the books. I would share them when and if more people ask.
My intention is that our financial situation improve so that I can get a laptop and perhaps go to my neighors, who have internet service and go online a lot more, if they are willing to share their internet service.
I get scared that finances are not going to improve even though we have already chosen to down size and now want to expand. That is a fearful voice inside me. But my fear level is way down from what it used to be!
I do EE 3 times a week. Cannot afford to detox yet--access to organic veggies is limited for now, and many of the items on detox diet plan are not affordable. Our veggies are not harvestable yet. Maybe by end of summer we can go to a city an hour away and get things we need and begin the detox. That is my intention and desire.
IS IT POSSIBLE FOR US TO INCREASE IN PROSPERITY AND EXPAND, WHILE THOSE NOT AWAKE YET EXPERIENCE FINANCIAL SHOCKS AND DECREASING PROSPERITY (in order to possibly choose to wake up as the system crumbles?)
We have been downsizing since '03. Many financial and emotional shocks over the years. We have really been through it and grown in knowledge expodentially, like so many others on the forum. I am a constant researcher and reader. I get all my books interlibrary loan. Thank you for your reading list!
But where do I fit in with the forum and the community of FOTCM with my financial challenges described above which limit my access to the forum?
For instance, I would like to read all of the Wave books that were put out after the chapters on the website were completed. (I am on Chapt 23.) Which books are those? Right now, all cash goes to food and gas--the basics. I am not complaining, because we do not have rent, mortgage or utilities and are growing food and may have chickens and a goat next year. We live a very simple, 'primitive' life, but want to eventually have more modern convenieces again. A bigger home with a guestroom. My husband built our present bungalow, a greenhouse and a barn out of salvaged materials---amazing how little one really needs to get by on. But I want to believe prosperity can happen in order to be able to better serve and help.
I will be online tomorrow for a half hour or so in a different town, different library. Looking forward to reading any replies and support. Thank you.

Hi SolarMother,

It seems to me that you are doing well with what you have. Logging into the forum daily is not a requirement. I don't know if you're a member but perhaps one day a branch of the FOTCM may open up your way which would make it easier for you to network with like-minded people. :)

And as long as you're practicing strategic enclosure and external consideration, having "awake" neighbors should not prevent you from networking with them on a wide variety of issues. I know the future is open but your current mode of living may be what many of us will be experiencing in the not-so-distant future. You've got a head start. :)

thank you, Odyssey for the encouragement. It helps a lot. Put a smile on my face.
I am a member of FOTCM/church...as a listener. There are a few members up north, but too far away to gather with. Maybe emailing would work. How do I find out who they are? Do you know if The Wave books are in libraries? Which of these books starts off where the online series leaves off?
gracias amigo

Hi SolarMother. I agree with Odyssey. For what it's worth, I like the idea of what you've got going on. I wish you all the best! I don't know about the idea of finding members to gather with. Protection of confidential personal details of members and the respect of freewill is an important issue. Someone else should probably address that question.

About the Wave books - I don't think they "pick up" where the online wave leaves off. My understanding is that the books include the online wave material but with the addition of more material, but I'm not an expert on that either.

Since you've described your situation, we, of course, understand what's up and I think the biggest issue concerning limited access to the internet is the pressure to identify precisely what you want to prioritize for now so that every precious moment is fully valued.

Welcome to the forum, by the way, and thanks for sharing of yourself and what you are trying to accomplish!
:)

As far as I know, the Wave books are not generally available in libraries. But the next time you go, you may ask them to order the books for you.

The books of the Wave have some additional material from the online version and the volumes beyond the online version of the Wave are from the Adventures with Cassiopaea series online.

By the way, you can get a 15" laptop from $300 to $400 range that has more than enough processing power for surfing the web and many other things. Also you can get a "net book" which is a like a 10" or so laptop and everything scaled down some for even cheaper. These things will continue to get cheaper as there is great deflationary pressure in everything that is not absolutely essential because there's no demand as people don't have the money to spend on non-necessities. So by the time you're ready to buy, the prices could well be much cheaper.

Thank you all for these replies. Verrrry helpful! I will continue to browse the forum whenever I am online, that is the start of something for me with this group. Timewise, eventually I might be able to get one of those cheaper laptops since being online is something I value quite a bit. I must keep in perspective that the first year homesteading is quite difficult--getting things set up. Bye for now.
