MPs will have to consider debating the issue of barring the Republican presidential candidate from entering UK after a petition on the matter passes 200,000

Rozina Sabur reports that so many people were rushing to sign the "ban Trump" petition that it actually appears to have crashed the website.

The Government's petitions website briefly crashed this afternoon under the strain of people attempting to sign a petition to ban Donald Trump from the UK. The House of Commons said that there were two five minute outages which prevented around 50% of users from signing petitions, which may have been caused by a high number of people attempting to access the site

Its gone up to 391,026 signatures when I signed.

Great poster Ocean, I shall share this on FB.

What's crazy about Trump's prominence in the media is that he's only polling at 35% (approx)and considered the front runner in the Republican Party which makes up about 50% of the voting population, which is about 45%, sadly, of the total population.

Let's see... 35% X 50% X 45% = ~8% of the US population... pretty damned close to the % delegated to the psychopaths, ay?

A candidate supported by only 8% of the US population getting so much media attention and creating discourse around the world? aaaYup, sounds like the MO of a psychopath.

We've added your signature to the petition: Block Donald J Trump from UK entry

I'm not one for petitions and this one will probably be ignored as many others have - eg. Vote no confidence in David Cameron i think had 200,000 - alas, social proof counts for something. And the guy is abhorrent.

Yeah, I also have got yet to see a petition or a public demonstration that makes a big difference in government policy. However, I also think that if they are taking us all down, it's much better to fall while raising our voices against it than going down quietly and passively. As they say, 'Not in my name'.

Also, it is true that they still need some amount of public support, or at least not too much opposition, in order to get away with their evil plans. So it is quite possible that if no one raised their voices we would be in an even worse situation!

And as you say, social proof may open some people's eyes or encourage them into action.

Just heard this morning on the Today Show that Trump's overall support among all voter/non-voters is only 6%...that says A LOT.

A ban petition should help turn down the volume of this loud mouth psychopath and his 6% functionally insane supporters.

Given all the nasty deceitful tactics the Republicans have taken to get elected (gerrymandering, electronic voting fraud, voter suppression tactics, pledging homage to Koch bros., etc.), I can see Trump as the truthful answer to their lies, cause he doesn't filter anything he feels and believes. He's like the little kid who blurts out something he overheard his parents say in private, but wouldn't dare say in public for fear of being admonished.

This Bible verse comes to mind:
Proverbs 16:18..."Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."

It's a "wait and see" show providing plenty of comic fodder for late night comedians.

I get the impression, "the Donald" is the new circus - come to town - to distract the disoriented masses, many of them being new immigrants. It gives them "something to belong too" while another portion of the U.S. population are thinking, "they will get the change - they can believe in" that Obama had promised and that failed to materialize?

Thump is a heightened Hollywood PR stunt production. The production goes into "overdrive" just like this U.K. petition, to bury and obfuscate leaks coming to the forefront, of the U.S. failure in Syria and involvement in Turkey, the screwed up mess in Ukraine and our own economy going down the drain. We're on the verge of a complete meltdown in domestic affairs but we got Trump - to the rescue?

Trump is part of the 1% and walking the same path, although with a lot more flare, than the other's. Showmanship and self centered pride is his priority.

Donald Trump: Another Terrorist from the 1 Percent
http://www.4thmedia.org/2015/12/donald-trump-another-terrorist-from-the-1-percent/

At any rate, the U.S. two party system is the front operation for the elite, ruling class that Trump is part of. He is in the top 5 percent of approximately 30 percent in the U.S. public and private sectors who view with some disdain the remaining 70 percent of Americans who are, comparatively, low wage earners.

There is no middle class to speak of in America. The Democrats and Republicans are little more than playthings for Trump and his fellow 30 percenters. And we must include the many foreign lobbyists and countries that own Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress and the White House.

The U.S. is ruled in the political machine style of the late 19th and early to mid-20th Century. Names associated with such forms of governing include William “Boss” Tweed of New York City, Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago and Mayor James Michael Curly of Boston. What is a political machine?

According to Wikipedia political machines “…sometimes have a political boss, often rely on patronage, the spoils system, behind-the-scenes control, and longstanding political ties within the structure of a representative democracy. Machines typically are organized on a permanent basis instead of for a single election or event.”

So the government responded with their usual evasive blabber and lies - but the signatures to ban trump beat the 'vote of no confidence in PM David Cameron'. For Trump :565,362. Cameron: 197,461.

The response:

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Block Donald J Trump from UK entry”.

Government responded:

The Government has a policy of not routinely commenting on individual immigration or exclusion cases.

For good reasons the Government does not routinely comment on individual immigration and exclusion decisions.

The Home Secretary may exclude a non-European Economic Area national from the UK if she considers their presence in the UK to be non-conducive to the public good.

The Home Secretary has said that coming to the UK is a privilege and not a right and she will continue to use the powers available to prevent from entering the UK those who seek to harm our society and who do not share our basic values.

Exclusion powers are very serious and are not used lightly. The Home Secretary will use these powers when justified and based on all available evidence.

The Prime Minister has made clear that he completely disagrees with Donald Trump’s remarks. The Home Secretary has said that Donald Trump’s remarks in relation to Muslims are divisive, unhelpful and wrong.

The Government recognises the strength of feeling against the remarks and will continue to speak out against comments which have the potential to divide our communities, regardless of who makes them. We reject any attempts to create division and marginalisation amongst those we endeavour to protect.

The current Tory government has caused devastation for the poorest in society for the last 5 years. We cannot afford another 5 years of Tory rule, with the recent welfare reform that will cause nothing but immense poverty in the UK.

The Petitions Committee decided not to debate this petition

The House of Commons Petitions Committee has decided not to schedule a debate on this petition, because the Committee does not have the power to schedule debates on motions of no confidence, and the petition does not contain a specific request for action on policy.

It is usually more effective to start a petition calling for a specific change to government policy or the law, rather than a petition about an individual Minister.

It is still open to MPs to seek time for a debate on this petition in the main House of Commons Chamber, if they wish to do so. However, debates on motions of no confidence are fairly rare.
Government responded

The Government’s reforms to welfare are focused on encouraging people to find and keep work, while developing a system that is fair, affordable and protects the most vulnerable in our society. the exact opposite of what is happening

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Vote no confidence in David Cameron”.
Government responded:

The Government’s reforms to welfare are focused on encouraging people to find and keep work, while developing a system that is fair, affordable and protects the most vulnerable in our society.

The Government’s reforms to welfare are focused on encouraging people to find and keep work, while developing a system that is fair, affordable and protects the most vulnerable in our society. We know that work is the best route out of poverty and that is why we are building a strong economy and getting people into work.

The progress made over the past five years provides clear evidence that our approach is working. Since 2010, 2.25 million more people are in employment, the overall number of people claiming the main out-of-work benefits has fallen by over 1 million, and we have the lowest number of workless households on record.

We are committed to driving real change and tackling the root causes of poverty - that’s why we are putting into law our new life chances measures on worklessness and educational attainment. These will ensure there is real action in the areas which will make the biggest difference to children in low income families, both now and in the future.

The Department for Work and Pensions offers a range of support in jobcentres across the UK, to help people into employment. This includes work placements, employer-led training, skills training, and help for promising entrepreneurs through the New Enterprise Allowance.

The introduction of Universal Credit marks a fundamental reform to welfare in this country. By combining six working-age benefits into one, Universal Credit simplifies the benefits system and ensures that work always pays. Compared to similar Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants, Universal Credit claimants spend twice as much time looking for a job, are 8 percentage points more likely to be in work, and earn more.

As well as getting more people into work, the Government is also committed to helping those in work keep more of the money they earn. We have committed to increasing the Personal Allowance from £10,600 in 2015-16 to £11,000 in April 2016, and raising the higher rate threshold from £42,385 in 2015-16 to £43,000 in April 2016. As a result of these changes, 29 million people will benefit and 570,000 will be taken out of income tax altogether.

We also increased the adult National Minimum Wage rate to £6.70 in October 2015 and from April 2016 workers over the age of 25 will be entitled to a National Living Wage of £7.20 per hour, which is forecast to rise to £9 by 2020.

In addition, the introduction of an improved childcare offer will help support parents into work. Working families will benefit from 30 hours of free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds from September 2017, and under Universal Credit from April 2016, claimants will get 85% of their childcare costs covered, up from 70% currently.

Taken together, these reforms ensure that the right support and incentives are in place so that people are always better off in work rather than trapped on benefits. They will help the lowest paid workers to keep more of the money they earn, while ensuring we move towards a society of higher wages, lower taxes and lower welfare.
