In this recent video Dr. Hyman initially gives some good information on the effects of gluten such as how it plays a role in inflammation and causing many disparate diseases, including mental disorders, digestive disorders and a whole host of autoimmune diseases. Even the idea that the large majority of people with gluten sensitivity and don't even realize the problem is brought up, pointing out that the problems with gluten are largely hidden. But it appears that this message is drowned out by Dr. OZ and his obsession over weight-loss and looking at the problem of gluten through this narrow lens. Dr. Hyman even mentions that gluten foods cause anemia in some people, which an the extreme form of weight-loss. So obviously the equation between gluten, ideal weight and overall health is a complex one; and Dr. OZ doesn't seem to get that the fact that weight-loss is not the be-all, end-all of good health.

In the second part he brings on a bimbo nutritionist who goes through various "gluten-free" junk foods (which are not really gluten-free) and points out that these "gluten-free" versions have more calories than the regular gluten-containing versions of these foods. From this assessment she decrees that "there's no reason for anybody to be eating a gluten-free diet unless it's medically necessary." But this makes no sense because a person shouldn't eat junk food to begin with - "gluten-free" or not. So to unravel this logic, we should not eat gluten-free junk food, but if we don't want to eliminate junk foods then we should make sure they is has gluten?? (we've now entered bizarro world!) Not only this, but she proclaims that these gluten-free junk foods are lower in fiber and thus bad for dieters trying to loss weight. The fiber menace strikes again!

Of course, Dr. Hyman sticks to the line in his books that one should test for gluten sensitivity via an elimination diet, but that one should try to reintroduce it after some time to see if it really causes problems. And although Dr. Hyman has great research and insights in general, this reintroduction of gluten proves to be his Achilles heel! It can sometimes take months to realize the benefits of going gluten-free after eliminating it completely. Even the slightest transgression in a gluten-free diet can bring back all the symptoms of inflammation with a vengeance. From the research we've gathered here, it seems to suggest that gluten is basically just a poison to all humans and that it should have no part in anybody's diet. Grains in the form of grasses were never meant to be consumed by humans and they were only introduced during famine times (likely brought on by cometary bombardments and other cosmic catastrophes) when all other food sources had been exhausted. The problems with gluten are far too subtle to let one's subjective impressions via an elimination diet be the judge of whether gluten is "good for you" or not. The addictive potential of gluten is just too strong.

Dr. Hyman also stresses eating a whole foods diet, and in the show he gives various examples of what a person should eat. However, among his recommended foods are evil soy products (e.g. tofu, soy protein shake)! While in the opening part he rails on gluten-free "frankenfoods" (i.e. processed foods), I have a hard time imagining soy as anything but a "frankenfood" considering the majority of it is genetically modified to begin with.

But no worry, since most people tend to fall into black and white thinking (especially in front of the idiot-box), I'm sure these blind spots in Dr. Hyman's research as well as the bias of Dr. OZ just made millions of viewers think that there's no value in going on a gluten-free diet whatsoever.

There's a woman in the office here with the same song. We all eat lunch together and a few of us are trying to eat healthy and when we share any information in front of her, she gets all uptight and blasts off with statements like that, and the old "everyghing in moderation." Her son is studying to be a doctor and I think she takes all our comments about anything against mainstream medicine as a personal assault. So I try and not talk about anything like that the days she joins us.

I've never understood why Dr. Hyman insists on recommending soy. Considering his entire UltraSimple diet is based on eliminating inflammation via possible allergens and soy is one of the MOST allergenic foods in our food chain, you'd think he'd have a clue. He actually acknowledges this in one of his books (can't remember which), but says that soy is so good for you you shouldn't eliminate it. Talk about a blind spot.

Yeah, but the fact that this is even getting air-time on a major network broadcast is something. It may at least make people more considerate of those who actually are concerned with their diets and are making these changes. Lack of knowledge is the biggest hurdle. There are a lot of people who are calling it quits on these types of elimination diets because they're family and friends refuse to accommodate. Seeing that Dr. Oz is accepting it may make a difference.
