Dream; toes, water, cuts, thiefs

Hi all,

I wanted to share a strange and quite vivid dream I had last night. My mother also had a dream about me last night. I will explain mine dream first.

In this dream I was with a girl, I do not know who this girl is or was but in this dream I seemed to care a lot about her. We were walking through a crowded place, it seemed like a bridge, but it looked broken. So in order to get to other side we had to go through the water.

So I told her to grab my hands and as we walked through the water, suddenly these huge machines were coming towards us from all directions. These machines can be described as something like this _http://www.bouwmachines.nl/public/hitachi_zm.jpg

At this moment I was very terrified, we were in the water and we could not move fast, and these machines were approaching us rapidly. They were so big that if we did not hurry we would both die.

So I hold her hand very tightly and pulled us through the water as fast as I could. And by an inch or so I escaped the machine but it ran over her feet. I was very afraid at this moment but glad that she was alive. I got out of the water and pulled her out. I looked at her toes and saw that 2 of her toes were cut of. I remember that emotionally I felt very sad about this. But her attitude was quite positive and she didn't mind it very much.

At this moment I called the police and they arrived and that's where the dream ended.

This morning I talked with my mother about my dream, and coincidentally she told me that she dreamt about me last night. But in her dream I was in our parents house and my mother saw a thief approaching towards our house. So she went downstairs and locked the door. And went back up.

She screamed for my name to come upstairs and escape with her through the bedroom window. But I didn't respond. So eventually she jumped out of the window herself and she said that at some point she felt lost but that her neighbours helped her come home again. I was also there, still home and the thief appeared to have gone.

I have been pondering quite some thoughts on what kind of symbolism this mean. I also discussed it with my mother. She told me that the big machines could symboligcally mean enemies, since in her dream she dreamt a thief approaching. And water symbolizes a lot of stuff, but it also refers to emotional states. So am I correct in assuming that emotionally I will be able to handle the situation? Whatever that may mean.

I also don't understand the symbolism of that girl and her toes.

Toe in my dictionary of symbols is very good. It symbolizes an extraordinary origin, in the sense of birth. The Pygmies said that the hero refused to birth normally so he decided to birth through a toe. That's why for them toe is an extraordinary symbol.

But in your dream, I don't know the significance. Water is a huge symbol: life, death, rebirth... vital strength... Creativity... humidity... energy... Soul....

Your dream is very interesting.

Feet also is a very huge symbol and for a lot of psychoanalysts it is a sexual symbol. Feet are very near the earth, and for others our body starts with the feet. In French we say: "Avoir les pieds sur terre", (to have your feet on the earth) that means to be realistic. But the feet in your dream was in the water, and maybe it means the same thing.

Thanks Loreta, I have also been doing some researching and I think I understand what it means.

The machines: Representing my own mechanicalness/buffers etc.

The girl in the dream:

''To see a girl in your dream represents your playful, innocent, and childlike nature. Perhaps you are behaving immaturely in some situation. Alternatively, a girl represents the feminine qualities of your character.''

And I asked some people from my familly on some feedback on my behaviour, most of them said that sometimes I act like a child. While I am actually trying to avoid that and learn how to draw the line between being an adult and the playful child. So the machines might be representing my own mechanicalness. And that my own mechanicalness is in the way of becoming that responsible and considerate adult.

And in the dream I am trying to help my ''inner child - representing as a girl''.

And I think the water means emotions in this context, that I have to guide my inner child through unresolved emotions in order to bring her safely to the other side. But that it has to come with effort, since running in water isn't easy, so one has to push oneself. My own buffers and mechanicalness will try to stop me from guiding my own inner child to a safer place. Atleast that is what I understand from it.

So in the dream the girl survived and so did I and I think that is a positive sign, but I don't quite yet understand the symbological meaning of loss of toes in this context.

I could also be way off I don't know but I am staying open minded and will go with the flow.

I think it is a good interpretation of your dream. You also forgot the symbolism of the police in your dream? Police is order, justice, or the contrary.... It can be your interior police.

Toe is a very complicated symbol. Maybe the price to pay to become more "adult" in your dream means to loose something, or to give something. I don't know. Or maybe this young girl, that you see as your child side, has not "les pieds sur terre".

How difficult is to interpret a dream.

Hey Bo,

Just some thoughts on your dream, for what it's worth. :)

Was the bridge crowded with people? How they seemed? Like normal people walking around or were they acting like emotional in some ways? They could represent some aspects of your psyche. I am just wondering why were they there in the first place...

I've found a "bridge" to be an important imagery where you are making a transitional phase or a "moving over" to a new stage or period. Since this bridge would be "over the water," then it would be an emotional transition. But, you saw that the bridge looked "broken" (what would make you think that it's "broken"?) and decided to walk across the water, which is a less safer than walking on a bridge. You know, bridge was built for a safe passageway over something that was less safe to walk on, and if I had seen you walking through the water, I'd say, "what's your hurry, dude?"

As for a "girl," I do agree that she would represent "feminine qualities" of yourself, but since she was "unknown" to you, she would be a part of yourself that is hidden, and you were holding onto an "hidden" aspect while you were trying to cross the water.

Whoa, that is huge! My first thought was, of course, like you said: "mechanicalness/buffers" that were trying to prevent you from crossing over.

Yeah, you escaped but she didn't. She lost two of her toes. A "toe" have to do with walking; perhaps walking through life or the way one "walks" through a situation. Why would we need toes? It's kinda like gears to which we would use to walk or run with greater or lesser efficiency (if that makes sense). "Toes" could be referred to as "energy" with the number "two" as twice the power. So, a loss of two toes would be twice the loss of energy in the way you walk through the water, as being driven by this "aspect."

The "machines" were the cause of that loss, and you were saddened by that loss.

Then, you called the "police," which could mean that you're feeling "powerless" (since if you don't need a police, you were in control, and if you do, you lost control of the situation).

Anyway, I thought I'd throw these possibilities out here as food for thought. :)

The bridge was crowded with people, minding their own business. There was nothing unusual about them that I noticed though. Interesting point about the bridge. However from what I recall is that this bridge was basically leading into the water. But that made me feel that the bridge must have been broken and the only way to cross it was through the water.

As for a "girl," I do agree that she would represent "feminine qualities" of yourself, but since she was "unknown" to you, she would be a part of yourself that is hidden, and you were holding onto an "hidden" aspect while you were trying to cross the water.

Interesting, in the dream I felt I greatly cared about this person, also her attitude towards her lost toe's was pretty interesting. She was okay with it and had like a ''tough guy'' attitude about it, I mean if I lost 2 toes I would be screaming in agony. So maybe there is a hidden aspect that is pretty strong in me that has not both its feet in reality as Loreta mentioned, something that I have yet to figure out what it is and deal with it. But I think the answer lies in ''nurturing the child within''.

Thank you ZS and Loreta for your insights, you gave me a lot of food for thought. I will be meditating on this matter and go with the flow.

I'm thinking along those lines. Toes help support the foot and assist with balance. So although the girl in the dream (the feminine aspect of yourself?) lost her balance emotionally speaking, she came out alright in the end.

Your feelings of wanting to protect the girl from harm - your dream amplified these feelings by creating a very urgent situation. The girl was a little harmed, and you were very upset to find that she now has a disfigurement.

Bo said:

So, you were the one who was frustrated - why? Did you feel like you "failed" at protecting her? It's hard to run in water; do you blame yourself for not being strong enough? Were you angry at the "world" for trying to harm her? (Calling the police is like complaining to the "world.")

I don't want to see people whom I care about come to harm. But it's impossible to keep them "pristine," and challenges will surely come their way. I entrust them to the Universe, and I try not to anticipate.

I don't know if any of what I wrote is accurate, but I hope it helps.
