Earthquake in Maryland

Ahhh... An earthquake just hit Baltimore, Maryland. Not sure where it was centered. I was on the top floor of a row home when it hit and it was shaking pretty bad. Don't know if there are any damages elsewhere, but glad the old place I'm in held up. First one I've ever been in and it has me pretty wired with adrenaline. Pretty scary.

I was just on the phone with a friend of mine in Bethesda Maryland, and they had an Earthquake while we were talking. No idea how strong it was, but it shook their building hard enough and long enough to make everyone run outside.

Very interesting. We had a very rare earthquake in Colorado last night. How rare is this in Maryland?

Hmm...and just read a news flash on the Israeli news site that there has been a very strong earthquake in the US and both the Capitol and the Pentagon were evacuated. And if I am not mistaken, they are in different states?

Added: They say the epicenter is in Virginia.

Put these numbers in the Google maps search box:

37.875 -77.908

it gets lat/long right automatically

Yep, looks like it was a 5.9 in Virginia - strong enough to shake from NC up the east coast.

I felt it heavily here in High Point, NC and reported it to USGS. Apparently it was felt from NYC down to us.

I felt very slight, almost unnoticeable, tremors all the way up here north of the border. :scared:

The only other one I've ever heard of in/around Maryland was 3.6 northwest of Washington DC in July 2010

The earthquake was the first with a magnitude of more than 3 near Washington since 1974, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center.

"This is a significant event for the region," she said.

Maryland Earthquake History:

Im about 200mi NE of the quake and a main bridge is cracked and shut down. This could make a real mess in the Northastern states with the thousands of old, un-maintained bridges that were built by the WPA 80 years ago during the Depression and not touched since.

Reagan Int'l in DC airport closed just now.

I am sorry about posting in the coming earthquake thread instead of this one, u hadn't seen it.

But the phones in my area (Aberdeen, Maryland) aren't working. Anybody else having this after effect?

NYC is abuzz, and there were multiple evacuations because the 5.9 in Virginia was felt all over the city. I didn't notice it, but I usually just assume trembling of the ground is the subway round here. My bed is above a subway tunnel so I've gotten quite used to rumbling. However, multiple confirmations from friends and the web say that it was felt from brooklyn to queens.

Here's the news on SOTT. It was up before all the news agencies got it. http://www.sott.net/articles/show/233946-US-Virginia-Earthquake-Magnitude-5-9 - Very Shallow

And the Colorado one(s): http://www.sott.net/articles/show/233932-US-Colorado-Earthquake-Magnitude-4-6-followed-by-Magnitude-5-3-numerous-aftershocks - Again, shallow.

I haven't been able to connect with anyone with my cell phone since the quake - everyone must be calling everyone else. Not sure if landlines are down or not.
