Eating Raw Fish

Hello Everyone,

Lately been having cravings as far as having raw fish for dinner, aka sashimi style, where raw fish is cut in small pieces and eaten. Are there complications as far as that ? I am aware of possibility of parasites, but how realistic is it ?
Does anyone have any experience how to prepare sashimi properly ? I am thinking about salmon, it's my favorite fish.

Thank You !

Salmon is perfect to have raw although the salmon I refer to is Atlantic Salmon. Parasites are more commonly found in freshwater fish IIRC.

Also keep away from fish harvested in the North-Western Pacific and North Eastern Pacific all the way down to the equator due to the radiation contamination from Fukushima. Especially stay away from the bottom feeding fish and shellfish that eat dead fish...because the fish that die from radiation exposure fall to the bottom of the ocean and the radiation is then passed on to the crustacean consuming it.

I'm lucky to live in South Australia where most of our seafood is local and caught in the untouched Australian Bight and fresh South Atlantic seas.

Even though I love Sushi, I refrain from eating it due the possibility of parasites. I'm not sure if they survive the stomac acids, but I tend to prefer to be on the safe side.

Catch your own fish & gut it fast, which prevents migration of parasites from the gut into the flesh. Always ice pack the fillets.

If you can't go fishing for yourself, chose your own fresh fish & either fillet it yourself or have it done for you at the market.
For raw fish only use the upper half/ back fillets, not the belly. Ice is again essential.

Some kinds of fish are not suited for raw consumption because of the way they feed. As a general rule: if you have not seen this breed of fish on offer raw at the local sushi shop, it is probably safer cooked.

I've never been a big fan of raw fish, apart from the odd bit of smoked salmon. I tend to cook fish slowly on a slow heat, to avoid oxidation of the Omega 3's as best I can.

Here's a video of Bear Gryllls catching and eating a salmon:

In other episodes, he generally eats fish raw as soon as he has caught them. But with other animals, e.g. freshwater crabs, he sometimes cooks them to kill parasites.

Some species of fish have more parasites than others, e.g. the marine fish barracuda, which often has parasitic worms.

I can tell you from personal experience that fish CAN have parasites. I contracted tape worms from fish I ate in a fancy, very popular, expensive seafood restaurant in Lima and didn't discover that I had them until they were fully grown. Tapeworms grow fast and they multiply quickly so they are not to be taken lightly AND they are extremely difficult to get rid of. I finally had to resort to 2 1/2 months of high voltage (as much as my stomach muscles could stand) to kill these buggers and I had to use a special doctor in SA to administer the electrical treatment. I'm talking straight electricity from the wall and I don't know of any doctors that do this so I was VERY lucky to find this doctor. After 2 1/2 months, the treatments FINALLY worked but the tapeworms had already done some damage because before doing the electrical treatments I could feel them swimming around my body and while I was feeling this I did some research and learned that they eat passageways through your organs to travel to other parts of the body. Scary stuff! (Not to mention the swelling in my face from the toxins they gave off).

After this experience, I will never eat raw flesh of ANY kind, only well done but not overcooked.

I hope this helps to give a perspective from a parasite sufferer.

One last thing I will note is that some people's bodies are more susceptible to catching parasites than others. It is the internal environment that gives them a good place to flourish. I had a hidden systemic candida issue due to an imbalance from being primarily vegetarian most of my adulthood and eating too many carbs which created a perfect environment for parasites to thrive in so your body might be different. I have eaten sashimi many times in the past with no problems.

Wow! Thanks for the account bdsign - that sounds horrible! Makes me wonder if the ketogenic diet is somehow protective ....

I made the mistake of consuming some sashimi about a year ago, maybe more.
I not only felt sick - even though it was salmon and tobiko - I later found out that the tobiko is not even tobiko, it's a mixture of chemicals basically with a very small amount of actual food thrown in there.

And as I work in an Asian fusion restaurant, I can tell you that even the Wasabi, which is supposed to help our bodies protect ourselves from parasites in raw fish is fake and does not do the job.
I'm talking about that clay looking green stuff they label as Wasabi, it's not. Real wasabi is supposed to offer some protection but it's really hard to find nowadays, especially in restaurants.

(As a sidenote, not many people know this, not even people who serve this kind of food,
the wasabi is for protection against parasites,
the ginger does nothing except cleanse your mouth of the taste of the previous sushi/sashimi, so you can fully enjoy the next one with its full flavor.
Kind of like drinking water at a wine tasting if I'm not mistaken.)

Not to mention more and more mislabeling incidents, so even if you read 'Alaskan salmon', it could be from anywhere. Most places are not reliable.

I would basically call these foods Japanese Happy Meals, i.e. plastic chemical foods in a different packaging. Except for the happy part. It's rather sad.

Added note: I had the salmon and the tobiko on separate days and they both made me sick so there must've been something wrong with the salmon as well imo.

At the risk of contributing noise, here is my two-cents on eating raw fish FWIW:
*the image in my head of watching a large, live worm crawling out of a fish on ice at a fish market
*where I come from, raw fish and other sushi like forms are considered bait
*Gollum whacking that fish against a rock and then munching away
But, "to each their own," "live and let live," and "whatever works for you."

Mhm, Don't know, but I eat Sushi and Sashimi 15 years and never had a problem with it. I must say all most was prepared by Japanese cook.
Right now I cut it drastically because of the Fukushima catastrophe!

Yeah, I don't think it is a good idea to eat fish after Fukushima has spread radioactive waste throughout the oceans. You never know what you are getting when you buy fish with so much fraud going on these days and mass die-offs. And, I don't think that there is an agency looking out for our protection against contaminated fish right now either, at least not effectively. If they tried, they would be overwhelmed with keeping track of all the catastrophe zones emerging, man-made and natural, and/or testing contaminated fish being shipped from questionable sources.

Colloidal Silver
One of the most important things I forgot to mention that I was taking during my full body electrical treatments is colloidal silver. Because the candida, tapeworms, GMOs and MMS treatments created holes in my intestines and damaged my intestinal lining, the colloidal silver helped me to focus the electricity to the interior of the gut for healing while treating the rest of my blood by killing any smaller parasites. CS with cleansing tea, enemas (esp. coffee), pro-biotics helped to balance things out. Cleansing is a must because of the die-off. I now use a Sota Zapper to maintain as I heal my digestive tract and my organs with the electric silver pulser. I also take silver electric baths too for healing of the skin inflammation.

Needless to say, it has been a journey in finding balance.

Ketogenic Diet
The ketogenic diet is awesome and I have experienced no bloating and no discomfort whatsoever. I will check my blood to see if there is any fat leaking into my blood because of the leaky gut. Be careful not to overwhelm when cleansing a very ill person as I learned the hard way. The die-off needs to be gradual, little by little killing the parasites and then removing the waste from the body each day.

If you are squeamish about enemas, you will feel so much better after doing one so it is worth a try at least once.
