Just watched this movie a couple of days ago and I have to say it seems the overall plot of the movie is to display how one pyschopath can do much damage. The pyschopath in this case being the Duke of Essex (I think), a young handsome and charming man who somehow manages to talk the queen into giving him a monopoly on sweet wine tax, a seat on the council, and even an army to lead. The queen caves to his requests again and again despite (at least as portrayed in this movie) her doubts to his true intentions. What stood out in my mind the most is his language skills (again, as portrayed in the movie). His charm and his words seem to be his biggest tools for getting what he wants from the queen. Aside from the queen herself, he is the main character of the movie.

In the end the queen wises up and finally puts the good of the kingdom above her love for him. He attempts a coup but garners little support. He is is tried for treason and beheaded.
