Since we have threads about airplanes, trains but not ships, I start this thread with this curious report

Norweg got up in the morning.... took a look and said that he doesn't drink any more... because he can see sea ships in the garden....

There was an unusual incident in the Norwegian town of Byneset, near Trondheim: The 135-meter container ship NCL Salten grounded right in front of Johan Helberg's house.

The ship, traveling at a speed of about 30 km/h in the direction of the town of Orkanger, did not turn into the Trondheim fjord as planned and hit the shore, stopping just a few meters from Helberg's house.

On board were 16 crew members of various nationalities, including Norwegians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians and Russians. Fortunately, no one was injured, and there was no fuel leakage. Police have launched an investigation into the causes of the incident, considering both human error and technical failure. One of the crew members is a suspect.

NCL boxship becomes lodged on Norwegian’s front garden
The Cypriot-flagged, 886 teu containership NCL Salten ran aground overnight only a few meters from a house on the shore in Norway’s Trondheim fjord.

There have been no reports of oil spills or injuries onboard the North Sea Container Line-owned boxship. The only real damage caused was to a heating pipe outside the house where the ship came to rest in shallow waters. The cause of the incident is not yet known and is under investigation.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration is taking over the salvage operation together with the vessel’s owner. There are several tugboats located in the area that could assist with the operation.

The owner of the house, identified in local media as Johan Helberg, was not even aware that the incident had happened.

According to Helberg, he slept just 7 m from where the bow of the vessel has now grounded.

Containership MSC ELSA 3 Sinks Off Indian Coast, All 24 Crew Rescued
The Liberian-flagged containership MSC ELSA 3 sank off the coast of Kochi, India, following a severe list that developed approximately 38 nautical miles southwest of the port. The incident began when the vessel, which departed Vizhinjam Port on May 23, reported a 26-degree list while en route to Kochi.

Initial rescue operations by the Indian Coast Guard successfully evacuated 21 crew members, while the captain, chief engineer, and second engineer remained aboard to assist with planned salvage operations. However, in the early hours of May 25, the vessel experienced rapid flooding in one of its holds and capsized. The remaining three crew members were safely rescued by INS Sujata.

“All 24 crew members ex Liberian-flagged container Vessel MSC ELSA 3 rescued safely, 21 by Indian Coast Guard & 03 by Indian Navy Ship Sujata,” confirmed the Indian Coast Guard.

The vessel was carrying 640 containers at the time of the incident, including 13 containing hazardous cargo and 12 with calcium carbide. Additionally, the ship had 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of residual fuel oil in its tanks.

Environmental monitoring operations are currently underway, with ICG aircraft equipped with advanced oil spill mapping technology conducting aerial assessments. As of the latest update, no oil spill has been reported.

The Indian Coast Guard continues to work closely with state administration to address potential environmental impacts and maintain maritime safety in the region.

Oh dear! I forgot to include in the title's thread, ships that catch fire due to sheer stubbornness

US Coast Guard Responding to Fire on Car Carrier ‘Morning Midas’ Off Coast Of Alaska; 800 Electric Vehicles On Board
The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to a fire on board the 600-foot car carrier Morning Midas carrying hundreds of electric vehicles approximately 300 miles off the coast of Alaska.

The vessel departed from Yantai, China on May 26 with destination Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico where it was expected on June 15. According to shipping database Equasis the 2006 Morning Midas is owned by Hawthorn Navigation Inc. out of London with management by Zodiac Maritime Limited.

Zodiac Maritime has confirmed the vessel is loaded with around 3,000 vehicles, 800 of which are electric vehicles. Smoke was initially seen emanating from a deck carrying electric vehicles, according to the statement.

The Coast Guard is reporting no injuries among the 22 crew, who abandoned ship via lifeboats and transferred to a nearby merchant vessel.

Several container vessels, including the 3,600 TEU Manukai and the 9,469 TEU Cosco Hellas have apparently altered course to assist.
