Volcanic ash from an erupting Mount Redoubt in Alaska forced the grounding of 19 Alaska Airlines flights, mostly to communities in the northern part of the state.

Immediately after the volcano began erupting, two flights from Seattle to Anchorage were canceled late Sunday night as a safety precaution, said Bobbie Egan, an airline spokeswoman.

Because winds were blowing to the north, Egan said this morning that the airline was able to land at Anchorage and other airfields in the southeastern part of the state. The bulk of canceled flights were out of Anchorage, to destinations like Bethel, Deadhorse, Kodiak, Nome, Kotzebue and Barrow.

Flight 81 to Anchorage departed on time at 6 a.m. from Seattle Tacoma International Airport and as of 7:30 a.m., passengers on Flight 83, with a scheduled 8 a.m. departure, were boarding their aircraft, Egan said.

There could be more cancellations and passengers flying to Alaska should check their flight status at alaskaair.com or by calling 1-800-ALASKAAIR.

"It's kind of a wait-and-see game," Egan said. "We can't make any projections. It depends on what the weather does and what Mount Redoubt does in the next couple of days."
