Feeding Baby

Hi
we just got back from holiday and we have planned to start a detox together. Baby is now 6 months old and has six teeth , its time to start putting solid food into his system.

He has already tasted boiled apple and a few strawberries which he seemed to enjoy.

If any one has any ideas of how we should proceed from here we would be grateful. I get to look after him permanently soon when the Hammer has to go back to work which im looking forward to.

Thanks.

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

Is mother still nursing baby? He should be breast fed for the most part for at least three more months if not six.

Thank you for your response Laura!
Yes, I am still breast feeding him.
The problem is, that I would like to start on detox (well, have had the first bowl of brown rice..)
What I was thinking was, that after the detox we should start to reintroduce food to us and introduce the same food to our baby. Maybe even starting him up on brown rice flour porridge cooked on breastmilk now, since we plan to eat brown rice for the next three days.

Thanks!

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

How about holding off the detox for a few months?

Also, with all we have been learning about lectins, brown rice is no longer a very good option.

Have a look at this important article before you plan your detox.

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

Thank you once again Laura!

I can put off the detox, but I think it is time for our baby to start on solids. He is a big boy weighing about 9,5kg and wants to eat nearley every hour, but I don't know what to give him now that he has turned 6 months. Also I don't know what fats to add to his food. Are the same fats which are good for adults also good for children/babys ie. coconut/linseed/olive oil?

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

Hi Hammer, AWtF. Have you tried lentils and/or black beans(or pintos)? Cooked carrots and/or peas added? Bananas? Well-cooked chicken/rice soup with carrot/celery (which will have some chicken fat)? Soft squash? Cooked/mashed apple?

When our daughter began eating solids, she really liked the above foods. If I remember correctly, this was around 8 months for her.

She didn't then and still doesn't do brown rice very well(like her father) and Fwiw, she was breastfed for 1 year.

We still have not done any type of detox with her yet(3 years), just are very careful about what she eats. The detox will come soon.

Hope this helps. :)

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

Cholas, please read the above linked article about lectins before suggesting that people start eating anything.

As for feeding the baby, 6 teeth are really not enough to say that the baby is ready to eat on his own, but I understand your dilemma: baby appears to want/need more than your milk.

There is a handy little gadget I saw in a baby store just the other day where you put in some fresh, raw food, the gadget steam cooks it rapidly, and then you turn it over and it purees it. Instant baby food.

I think I would start with fruits like bananas, pears, apples, peaches, berries etc. This for a month or so. Then add veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, chard, cabbage, brussels sprouts, beets to the fruit (alternating) for a month or so. Then, add chicken, turkey, fish. You could conceivably put some chicken breast, carrots and sweet potatoes in the baby food steamer/puree machine, and have a whole meal in one.

The important thing at this point is to pre-digest the baby's food by cooking and pureeing. When there are more teeth, baby can start to have food that is steamed and cut up into little pieces.

I would suggest breast feeding first, then giving the supplemental food and observe how long it takes for baby to get hungry again.

Also remember that breast feeding is as much for your health as the baby's.

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

I take it you are referring to the lentils/black beans?

After reading the above article I was, possibly inaccurately under the assumption that soaking these first removes most of the potentially harmful lectins. It also says tobacco contains these, so out of curiosity(being a smoker) I am looking into it a bit more.

I apologize for misleading anyone if that is indeed the case.

Hi cholas,

You can also read the following articles in the lectins thread: http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=18702.0

It will give you more background in order to make healthier choices.

Happy reading :)

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

I sent the compilation of articles to Dr. Hyman (author of ultra simple diet), so perhaps the next version of the diet will more closely reflect what is on the eiriu-eolas forum.

That thing is a little wonder. I had one and I was so happy with it! Plus, they resell on ebay for 75% of the original price (at least here in Belgium), which in the end means it does not cost that much.
For our daughter, we started with banana, apple compote, cooked fruit, etc.
They quickly want to hold the spoon themselves, so get the camera ready! I have a picture of my daughter's first meal: there is more on her face than in her plate! She had a banana beard!

Re: Needing Suggestions for What should a 6 month old baby eat?

Would buckwheat porridge cooked on breast milk topped with fruit puré be ok? Would like to give him something filling and healthy.

I don't know what others think about it, but I personally would introduce only one food at a time. I would first introduce fruit, then vegetables, then some sort of compliant cereal and then meat. I see that this is what Laura proposed as well. About buckwheat: you might want to try and find out your baby's bloodtype (what are your and your husband's/ancestors bloodtypes?) because for B types, buckwheat is not recommended as it slows down their metabolism, contribute to insulin irregularity, fluid retention and fatigue.
