Forget self-help books or deep breathing - the cure to social anxiety could be in what you eat.

Researchers have found that fermented foods, such as sauerkraut and yogurt, may help alleviate the symptoms of chronic shyness.

The team, from the University of Maryland and the College of William & Mary in Virginia, believe that probiotics or "good" bacteria in fermented foods increase the production of a neurotransmitter called GABA, which produces similar effects to anti-anxiety medications.
