Fires around Orthodox Easter torch 3 churches in 3 cities

Investigators in three cities are looking into large fires at Orthodox churches that occurred around the religion's Easter celebrations and caused widespread damage.

The blazes in New York City, as well as Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, caused only minor injuries, according to multiple reports.

The New York City conflagration on Sunday at the Trinity Chapel Complex that was host to the Serbian Orthodox Church in Manhattan produced dramatic images of flames shooting through windows that filled social media.

FDNY investigators haven't given any indication yet what started the blaze, reports CBS New York. Only the church caretaker was injured when he rushed in to try and put the fire out, which began shortly after parishioners had wrapped up Easter celebrations at the cathedral.

"My stepfather (the church caretaker) was in there, but he's fine. He just has smoke inhalation so everybody left thank God," parishioner Alex Elic told CBS New York.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro called it a very sad day.

"No one has been injured, there is no one reported missing, and that's the good news for today. The bad news is this church has been destroyed by fire," he said.

A church priest, Father Djokan Majstorovic, says he felt like he was "in a nightmare" as he tried to get to the fire scene that was blocked off by firefighters.

The church was built in the early 1850s and was designated a city landmark in 1968.

In Sydney, a large blaze destroyed the Macedonian Orthodox Church in the Rockdale neighborhood on Monday, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. Three firefighters were injured battling the blaze when bricks fell on them as parts of the building separated.

The Guardian reports the Sydney church was around 126 years old.

In Melbourne, the 115-year-old Holy Church of Annunciation, a Greek Orthodox church, was heavily damaged by a fire that was ultimately contained to the roof, reports The Guardian.

While officials have not linked any of the fires, Orthodox religious ceremonies frequently involve lots of candles, leading an Australian worshiper to speculate to the Sydney Morning Herald the causes may be innocent.

"[It's] Orthodox Easter at the moment, and who knows, maybe candles left? Never know," the church member said.

Three churches, all more than 100 years old, and all three got burned in the same day in fire caused by candles? That's a little suspicious to me. :/

There's a lot of pictures of Serbian church here: http://www.b92.net/info/vesti/index.php?yyyy=2016&mm=05&dd=02&nav_category=78&nav_id=1126677

, indeed. All orthodox churches and all around the time that worshipers are doing orthodox Easter services.

FWIW, that church fire in Russia was actually in a building right next to the monastery’s main cathedral, but still close enough to be called a church fire for all practical purposes. At least one incident was a four-alarm fire and described as 'intense', whereas one was accompanied by the smell of burning rubber (?) as reported by a person in the neighborhood.

Yeah, I'm not sure if that Russian monastery incident belongs to this group, but these three churches caught in fire in the same day (orthodox Easter) is very unusual.

Indeed. I find it curious. And that those 3 were on western soil, well, it's easy enough for the nefarious out there to do it on their own patch.

Added: just to note, maybe due the source, the holiday has been related to fire/light in other traditions too, even the queen of England had 'beacons' (bonfires) lit on her behalf on for her 90th birthday, i think, the 21st of April:

Beltane

Beltane (/ˈbɛl.teɪn/)[3][4] is the anglicised name for the Gaelic May Day festival. Most commonly it is held on 1 May, or about halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice.

Beltane is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and it is associated with important events in Irish mythology. It marked the beginning of summer and was when cattle were driven out to the summer pastures. Rituals were performed to protect the cattle, crops and people, and to encourage growth. Special bonfires were kindled, and their flames, smoke and ashes were deemed to have protective powers.

The Queen has lit the first of more than 900 beacons lighting up across the UK and overseas as part of her 90th birthday celebrations.

Interesting, when taken in the context that each of the structures, symbolically - represent Orthodox Christianity and rebirth during Easter celebrations? I have visited the Serbian church in Manhattan and it was absolutely beautiful inside and tranquil. Another piece of the historical past, that's now lost to us. They can rebuild but it won't be the same.

Yeah, perhaps it was a message to these three orthodox countries to not be too close to Russia?

Yeah, it's completely destroyed now. :(

Coordinated attack feared after massive cathedral blaze

The historic Manhattan cathedral that was gutted in a massive fire was one of four Christian Orthodox churches to go up in flames on Orthodox Easter Sunday — sparking fears of a coordinated attack on the religion.

While FDNY officials said the blaze at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava on West 25th Street does not appear suspicious, members of the Orthodox community have doubts.

They are worried that the blaze — along with church fires in Australia and Russia — were set in retaliation for the religion’s role in blocking the canonization of Croatian Nazi supporter Aloysius Cardinal Stepinac — whose potential sainthood has created a rift between Serbia and Croatia, with the leaders of each lobbying Pope Francis.

Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic discussed the issue in a visit to the Vatican in early April, while Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic made his case last September.

Francis decided last week to postpone the ceremony for Stepinac, prompting concerns about potential retaliation.

Too many churches have burned to call it an accident,” said Dr. Dušan T. Bataković, a former Serbian ambassador who is now director of the Institute for Balkan Studies in Belgrade.

It is very strange that it happened, that the fires all took place on Easter, the greatest Christian Orthodox holiday,” he said. “Some kind of terrorist action can not be excluded.

In addition to the fire that engulfed St. Sava, churches in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, and in northern Russia were all engulfed in flames just hours after Easter services.

“Within the last six months, the Serbian church was urging Pope Francis not to canonize into a saint, Cardinal Stepinac, for his complicity in the large-scale massacres and genocide against the Serbs, Jews and Roma [Gypsies],” Bataković said.

“Despite protests from the Croatian church, the pope postponed the decision of making Stepinac a saint, and there is a lot of anger, because he is considered as one of the key church members in the Croatian history.”

In a letter to Francis, Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Irinej said, “We are afraid that there are too many open questions and wounds which Cardinal Stepinac symbolizes.

“His canonization, to our great regret, would return the relations between Serbs and Croats, as well as between Catholics and Orthodox faithful, back to their tragic history.”

Barry Lituchy, executive director of the Jasenovac Research Institute, a Brooklyn-based human-rights nonprofit, told The Post he has been bombarded with calls from worried Orthodox community members.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and the thought that this is an attack has not escaped us,” he said. “This deeply affects everyone in the Serbian community.”

In Sydney, fire reduced the Macedonian Orthodox Church of the Resurrection to rubble, rending the 126-year-old sanctuary in two, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

In Melbourne, the 115-year-old Holy Church of Annunciation of Our Lady, a Greek Orthodox church, was heavily damaged by a fire that was contained to the roof, authorities said.

In Russia, some 70 parishioners were evacuated from the historic Valaam Monastery in Lake Ladoga after it caught fire during their Easter celebration.

Lituchy said investigators need to take a close look at the recent Catholic-Orthodox relations when trying to determine what may have caused the fires in Australia and Russia.

He added that during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s — when the Serbs fought the Croatians in the former Yugoslavia — threats were made against the Cathedral of St. Sava.

The church also had deep financial troubles and is battling a major Manhattan developer over a $100 million project that fell through two years ago.

St. Sava had seemingly found an angel to rescue its congregation and crumbling 1850 landmark building from financial ruin in May 2014, when it struck a deal with Madison Equities.

Under its terms, the firm would get a $100 million, 99-year lease to build a commercial building on an adjacent lot in exchange for paying rent and $250,000 to repair the church.

But the developer found that it would have to pay an “exorbitant” $13.5 million real-estate broker’s fee — six times the market rate — to a third party called TenantWise to ink the deal, court papers show.

Madison Equities sued to void the deal and sought $500,000 to recoup the repair payment and other costs.

A judge tossed the developer’s case in January, finding the firm was aware of TenantWise’s involvement in the leasing of the church’s land. The developer is appealing.

When I saw the videos of the church in Manhattan I was astounded - it looked like hell had opened up inside of it and was spewing out of every window. I was also in Manhattan on that day, about thirty blocks away at Puck's apartment. Didn't hear about the fire until hours later while browsing FB, and if I heard sirens, I probably didn't think much of it because you hear sirens all the time in the city.

After reviewing these three church fires in Manhattan and two in Australia, I would also include the complex in northern Russia which Buddy correctly identified "as a building right next to the monastery’s main cathedral, but still close enough to be called a church fire for all practical purposes". I sense, there may be a hidden factor behind these fires, which has nothing to do with the Pope blocking the canonization of a new Saint or problems with a developer in Manhattan?

Could the fires have a connection to this?

Envoy: France Glad Putin to Visit Russian Orthodox Complex Opening in Paris
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160428/1038764626/putin-visit-complex.html

French government envoy Jean-Pierre Chevenement said he was glad the Russian president plans to visit the opening ceremony for a Russian Orthodox complex in Paris.

Construction began in 2014 on the Russian Orthodox complex on Paris' Quai Branly. In March, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Prikhodko said that the complex was likely to be completed in the fall of 2016.

"There is no Europe, preoccupied with its own interests and controlling its actions, if France and Russia do not agree on dialogue. I will be pleased, in this regard, with the next visit of Russian President [Vladimir] Putin, who will attend the opening of an Orthodox church in Paris, and may also go to the 1914 Battlefields of Reims," Chevenement told RIA Novosti.

The 4,200-square-meter (1 acre) site will house four buildings — an Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity, a Russian-French primary school, an exhibition center and the diocesan administration with a concert hall and living quarters for priests and Russian Embassy cultural staff.

The main theme of the architectural complex is the union of traditional temple architecture and contemporary culture and orthodox complex. The unifying element is the transparent cover, down from the domes covering the garden and enveloping angular reconstructed building "Univers". As in traditional Christian temple complexes, the whole area around the temple is a garden with a glass railing fence around the perimeter of multimedia. This makes the complex open to the views of the sun and air, and communication.

In the center of the site, in the center of the garden behind the glass media facades facing the promenade and avenue Rapp is the volume of the Orthodox church. The project envisages construction of the temple in the tradition of the ages 14-16, with a clean and simple volume. The temple is oriented strictly to the east, with a deviation within a 5-degrees. Temple of the five-domed, three-nave with side borders. The bulk of the temple corresponds to the traditional elongated proportions, with the total area in the interior — about 400 sq.m. due to the extended lower part. It is proposed underground organization, small odnoprestolnogo temple crypt.

March 19, 2016 - Mounting of the dome marks beginning of the final stage in construction of the Russian center, which is a historic event, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Prikhodko says.

[...] An orthodox cross was erected on Saturday on the dome. It was consecrated by Bishop Nestor of the Diocese of Korsun. The company, responsible for the cross erection, was Innovation Construction Management. Its director, Sergei Pogodin, told TASS they were the only Russian participants in the construction of the center. "The crosses have seven layers of gild."

The construction company’s head said the key task for the designers was "to make it so that the crosses are installed firmly on the dome’s composite materials." "For that, inside the domes were made special supportive constructions, designed especially for this project."

29 Mar 2016 - Less than a year after the project began the Multiplast team put in place the main dome of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Paris.

This operation was performed in the presence of His Excellency Alexander ORLOV, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in France, Monseigneur NESTOR, Orthodox Bishop of France, Jean-Michel WILMOTTE, the architect in charge of the project, as well as numerous other figures from the world of politics and beyond.

A magnificent showcase
This setting of the main dome of the Sainte-Trinité Cathedral is the most dramatic in a series of five that will be completed over the course of the next weeks: five iconic domes that will top this Orthodox Cathedral constructed by Bouygues Bâtiment Ile de France Private Construction from the vision of Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the project's architect. For Multiplast, it isa wonderful showcase of Group Carboman's expertise and one that is in the heart of Paris, but a few hundred meters from Eiffel Tower, on the corner of Quai Branly and Pont de l'Alma. Jean-Michel Wilmotte one of the most known architect for contemporary architectural projects all over the world. He personally greeted and congratulated the technicians in charge of the operation.

86,000 gold leaves
A unique part of this project was that the production of the domes was begun even before the building's foundation were completed. As opposed to traditional manufacturing techniques, by choosing a composite domes solution, with the collaboration of engineering office "Cluster Méca", the project schedule could be shortened. Similarly, the load descents (ground) were also reduced, thereby improving the dimensional tolerances of complex shapes (+/- 3 mm). Finally, by constructing the domes in the way that Multiplast did, the team was able to achieve the 640 m² finishing with gold leaf in an air-conditioned worhshop. One can easily imagine the difficulty, not to say impossibility, of attempting to lay 86,000 gold leaves outdoors, in winter, at a height of 50 metres !

It was certainly a bold decision to dare to make parts such a scale (12 metres high and 12 metres in diameter) some 500 km from the place of final installation. Guillaume Kemlin, one of the engineers in charge of the project, explains : "Early on, in the design stage logistical requirements were at the front of our minds. Road width, even with our specialist transport solutions, is of course a factor, setting us a limit of four meters in terms of the petals we could transport. As such, we utilised our digital tools to the maximum, producing the joints of the big domes in 13 pieces and the small in four, so as to be discrete as possible in our execution. The results have more than lived up to our expectations."

Thanks for sharing. When I read that several orthodox churches caught fire I also thought if it could be stroke against Russia. Last year happened also two fires in Russia, one in a big store and one in one of a very old and important library, beside a building next to the Kreml some weeks back. But maybe it were just coincidences.

Sounds to me more like a message from the universe, whatever that might means.
