Fire Fox won't start

Thomas Alan

The Living Force
I can't load Fire fox. It tries to install updates then gives me error message:
"The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again."
Then tries again to install updates. Same result
This is from a clean boot. So Fire fox is not running as message seems to indicate.

This message appeared yesterday but then Firefox went ahead and loaded. Just a circle today.

I have thought of removing then reinstalling Firefox but would probably loose all my bookmarks.

Any ideas?

I'm using IE at the moment.

Have you tried to reboot your computer, maybe there are some Firefox processes still running?

Here are some links that may help:

Hope it helps :)

[Edit - sorry you said it was from a clean boot. May need to remove files from updates folder or reinstall unless someone else has a better idea]

Hi Mac, you can export your bookmarks and it should be under the menu of bookmarks.

Link: exporting bookmarks

Hope, this helps.

Still won't load after several reboots. Same error message. After a reboot I checked the task manager to see if there are elements of Firefox running as the error message suggests, but it is not.

I've been looking for a bookmarks file on my PC for so if I remove firefox then reinstall I can add the bookmarks later. So far haven't found anything I can use. I don't see how I can export bookmarks if I can't load it at all.

I left a message in their help section describing the problem but no reply so far.

It was due to the FireFox update - it happened on my machine as well. This is the second time in a year that FireFox has updated and then crashed. Since my machine would also then not uninstall FireFox, so I could reinstall a clean version, I used the 'restore to a previous date' function in Windows - then, when the prompt came up to 'update FireFox', I refused. Now it runs okay and I won't update it again until the next update is released. Unfortunately, when this happens, it also disables Microsoft Silverlight so video playback through sites like NetFlix wont' work - soooo - had to uninstall that program as well and re-install it. All in all - FireFox updates can screw a lot of things up if they go wrong. Not sure why they go wrong, since it's not consistent, but when they do, it's a pain!

I successfully removed and reinstalled firefox without loosing my bookmarks. So far so good. The system restore didn't work. Message said could not restore to any of the dates I tried.

Thanks for the suggestions.

See how it goes from here.

Try the latest firefox beta:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html

It installs in a separate folder than a normal version of firefox so it shouldn't conflict. It will pull in all your bookmarks so you can use them automatically.

When all else fails, get Google Chrome :)

Thanks for the suggestions, SAO. It looks like it's going to fail again. This morning Firefox tried to install an update and failed. Though it went ahead and loaded. I'm guessing it won't load at all next time. You'd think that the new version I installed would already have the pesky update.

I was thinking of trying Opera or one of the others. We'll see how it goes.

I have saved my booksmarks by clicking in the bookmark dropdown "organize booksmarks". At the top of the pop-up that appears you will see "import and backup". Click on that, and then click on "Export HTML". At least that is what I do.

Hi, Nienna Eluch:

I just downloaded Firefox 4.0 Beta to give it a go. (The version I installed yesterday failed as I thought it might.) This version does not seem to have an Organize bookmarks tab. But it loaded all my book marks ok. Hopefully it will load ok next time. There was a message when I downloaded it that there would be no updates without my permission.

My response to this situation shows the value of EE, detox and diet improvement. In past times not being able to use my browser would have infuriated me. I would want it fixed now!

Instead I have be asking questions, trying things, observing results, learning as I go. Kind of fun really. Relaxed alertness. Wow, ain't it great!
