Surprise in pampean town due to meteorite falling

Neighbors from the small town of Santa Isabel, in La Pampa province, were surprised yesterday evening with the fall of a meteorite, causing a big explosion which has been felt also in General Alvear, a department to the south of Mendoza province.

“At 6:30 pm a cloud appeared and we heard an explosion that almost felt in every corner of town", said police officer Julio Alcaraz, from Santa Isabel, located 320 km west of Santa Rosa and 40 km south of the border with Mendoza province.

Roberto Trigues, Civil Defense chief of General Alvear said to MDZ newspaper that “effectively it would be a meteorite. We’ve made a radio triangulation and determined that the point of impact is inside the triangle formed to the north by Punta Del Agua, to the southwest Agua Escondida and to the southeast by Cochi-Co".

The neighbors also stated they saw an object falling from the sky. “It happened in broad daylight and that was clearly a ball of fire, like a reflector, falling to the ground. Before touching the ground we saw an explosion which formed some clouds. Something else continued falling and in a few seconds there were nothing but smoke”, said José Luis Cuadrado to Diario Textual newspaper from La Pampa.

The object fell in the middle of the countryside, in a uninhabited area of 300.000 hectares.

“We have ruled out the danger of fires because there has been snowing all day long and there is a lot of humidity”, assessed Trigues.

From the Carmensa police department (20 km south of Alvear) they also pointed out hearing a big explosion that “made the windows shake”. The first thing they thought was about an earthquake, but the possibility was ruled out later.

There are no reports of deaths or material damages. Due of the impact force, in some pampean areas, a slight seismic movement was registered.

That is truly spectacular. I've seen many meteors but nothing like that. Here is another report in English.
