Fireball lights up sky over parts of Midwest

A fireball lit up the sky – and the phone lines – across six states, including Minnesota, on Wednesday night, the National Weather Service says.

The weather service received numerous reports of a fireball or meteor streaking across the sky between 10 and 10:30 p.m. across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, northern Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The fireball was seen over the northern sky, moving from west to east, according to the Quad Cities weather service office in Davenport, Iowa, which has Web links to video of the fireball.

The apparent meteor broke up into smaller pieces and disappeared well before it reached the horizon, the weather service said. The Davenport office received several reports of a prolonged sonic boom, along with shaking of homes, trees and various other objects including wind chimes.

It wasn’t known whether any of the meteor hit the ground.

I saw this last night. I was outside having a cigarette and I noticed what appeared to be lightning in the south-east direction. I thought, "this is odd, the sky is almost clear!" I didn't hear any sound or rumbling like others have reported, but I did see the flash.

Although reading about meteors and fireballs is nothing new to me now, it takes on a new dimension when one actually witnesses it.

I saw this on Facebook:

I'm not entirely sure about the authenticity of the radar frames above. It seems a little sensational, but I'm not sure. Maybe somebody with more knowledge of Doppler radar will have a better objective analysis than I can give.

So, assuming the radar image is authentic, it looks like it captured two big blasts. One between Madison and Milwaukee and another around the border of Iowa and Illinois.

A sheriff's dashboard cam recorded the incident - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4tbmL_CxXs

"Gee! US!?! - cries STS quickly sipping tea on potty.
At first it seemed, what meteor has to do with Pailin?
Then I've realized, some one in Universe was practicing the aim

Re: Massive Fireball in the Midwest USA today

I noticed a flash through the window while lying in bed last night, thought it was lightning at first.

Me too, I was expecting the rumble of thunder.

They say its a "meteor"... "Nature's little fireworks" - ABC
It was moving pretty slow for a meteor and where did it go?
Strange days in America.

Hi and thanks, Graceon Verite. :) There are 2 articles on SOTT regarding that possible meteor, located here and here.

My bad. Still new and still stumbling my way around the website.

It's totally okay - better to post a link like that twice then to have it not posted at all.

Always the same thing out of the MSM and the "experts"- Nothing to see here. Move along. Nothing out of the ordinary. (Jedi hand wave).

Thanks.
