Firefox bookmark problem

I am hoping that some of you tech-savvy people here can help me.

After having to have my computer worked on, and finding out that something was wrong with my Firefox browser (among many other things). It was uninstalled from my computer. Everything.

I had been told several years ago how to save my booksmarks by exporting them to html and put them in a file. I've been updating it since so it has all of my booksmarks in it.

After reloading the most recent Firefox browser, I found that I cannot bookmard a new page, except to bookmark it to my toolbar bookmarks and then dragging it to the appropriate place on my "booksmarks". I've tried several of the things recommended on the Firefox page for not being able to bookmark pages and none of it has worked. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox about 3 times and it is never any different. Everything else works, and I can click on any bookmark I have and it brings up the page. The only thing I can't do is save a page (except, like I said, to save it to my toolbar bookmark and then drag it to wherever I want it on my "bookmarks").

Is it the fact that I saved them to html? That's the only thing I can think of. And, if so, is there a way to fix it?

Have you imported the old bookmarks back into Firefox? If so, where did they go? This can be done by going to Show All Bookmarks and then the menu options on the window that appears.

I've never heard of simply not being able to save bookmarks the normal way, so not really sure what the problem may be...but it sure does sound annoying!

Can you also be more specific about exactly what happens or is preventing you from bookmarking the normal way - is it greyed out, etc.?

Hi Nienna Eluch,

Count yourself lucky to have an updated version of your old bookmarks available. Apparently you imported them the right way since they seem to be working properly: when you click one of them, the relevant page appears in a new tab or window. Okay so far.

To solve your current problem, try the following:

1. take a page you want a new bookmark for or any random page that isn't already bookmarked previously
2. place your cursor somewhere on the page where it doesn't cover anything
3. rightclick your mouse
4. choose "add bookmark" in the dropdown menu and (left)click on it
5. watch what happens next:
A) either you will be able to choose the appropriate folder where to put the new bookmark or to make a new folder for it
B) OR the new bookmark will automatically appear in the bookmark toolbar again

If the latter of the two should happen, the only way I can think of to remedy this is to completely remove the bookmark toolbar so that it will no longer be available as a complicating factor.
To do that you have to find the toolbar menu (Tools or Extra probably) and disable the bookmark toolbar at least temporarily. All the bookmarks currently there will stay available elsewhere, so you won't lose them.
Then try the whole procedure again or try directly to bookmark the new page in the usual way.

Would that still not be possible, then you have to scrutinize your browser settings in general (all of them preferably) to see if you can find any anomalies there and adjust them accordingly.

Hope this helps.

I save my bookmarks by going to the 'Show All bookmarks' and click on 'Import Backup'. There is an option to 'Export bookmarks to html', which is what I was showed to do by someone that is more computer savvy than I am. Now that I have done the 'Import bookmarks from html' in order to get all of my saved bookmarks back in my browser, when I click on 'bookmark this page', the little box pops up with all the info in it, I click 'done' and nothing is saved. Yes, annoying. Also, all of my folders for different categories, are not in that little pop up window anymore.

Okay, I'll give that a shot. Thank you.

Okie dokie. I just tried it and it did not work. Then, instead of using the 'unsorted bookmarks' which usually came up when I bookmarked a page and then went to the bottom of the bookmark list, I selected 'bookmark menu' in the little box, and it bookmarked it. I then realized that all of my category files were attacked to that and now I can bookmark everything again, except unsorted bookmarks, at least for now. :-[ I hope that made sense.

I am so sorry for my ignorance in these matters and really appreciate the help you have given me. :flowers:

I guess all there is is lessons.

Congratulations ! You more or less solved the problem yourself - be it per chance, so to speak.

When you wrote this
when I click on 'bookmark this page', the little box pops up with all the info in it, I click 'done' and nothing is saved. Yes, annoying. Also, all of my folders for different categories, are not in that little pop up window anymore.
I immediately thought of my next line of defense which would have been what you just did yourself. So, that is no longer necessary to explain.

and now I can bookmark everything again, except unsorted bookmarks
So if I understand you correctly, it now turns out that the bookmark toolbar took over the function of reservoir for the unsorted bookmarks. That's why with your previous method of bookmarking all new bookmarks ended up over there consistently. It also explains why you then had to drag them manually into the corresponding category, because you weren't preselecting the category folders first, and now you do so again.

This all came about because not only did you import the old bookmarks as such via the HTML file but also the old structure of categories in which they were placed - all in one go. I knew you first had to find those, because they had to be in there somewhere as Jason(ocean59) already stipulated, and you just found them on your own. Great !

Thus, for unsorted bookmarks you can use the toolbar if you so wish or you can make a new category folder for them and discard the toolbar completely. Your choice.

Actually, I put the toolbar bookmarks back because it still wasn't working even when it was gone.

Everything started working again once I used the 'bookmark menu' and then found my category folder stashed within the 'bookmark menu'. Once I clicked on the + next to 'bookmark' menu, the folders all appeared and now everything seems to be working fine. I just am not savvy enough to have realized this right at the start. I'm just not going to be using the 'unsorted bookmarks' thingy from now on.

I sure hope that make sense.
