Tens of thousands affected as severe flooding hits Thailand’s south

Tens of thousands of people in southern Thailand have been affected by severe flooding that has submerged roads and railways, forced schools to close and left some residents trapped in their homes.

The province of Narathiwat in the country’s far south near the border with Malaysia was most seriously affected, with some districts submerged for days, according to broadcaster Thai PBS.

It said that “scores of people” had requested assistance and some were sitting on the roofs of their flooded homes.

Days of torrential rain have also caused problems at sea, with at least seven boats sunk in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea since Friday.

At least 17 dead after landslides in Chocó

At least 17 people have died and 30 have been injured after several landslides occurred this Friday afternoon in Carmen de Atrato (Chocó), as confirmed by the fire department. Rescue operations for those who remain trapped have been suspended for tonight due to weather conditions that put rescuers at risk.

A landslide fell around five o'clock Friday afternoon in the Las Toldas sector, in Carmen de Atrato, a municipality on the road that connects the Chocoan capital with Medellin. About 50 people had taken shelter from the rain in a house just when the landslide occurred and buried the house. For hours, there were difficulties for the rescue agencies to arrive due to several other landslides that obstructed the way.

The governor of the department, Carolina Cordoba, explained at about ten o'clock at night that several ambulances had been able to reach the place of the landslide and that overflights were being prepared in the area. "Today is a day of mourning for the Chocoan people, our prayers are with the families of the deceased, our efforts are already underway to evacuate the injured", she lamented in declarations contained in a communiqué which also announces the state of calamity in the whole department.

The person explains that the rain was torrential so some people took shelter in a nearby hut while others remained in their vehicles when suddenly the landslide happened and buried the hut and vehicles.
