The Living Force
Has anyone see this movie?
Don't get misled by the title (Jeux interdits in French), this movie is about childhood, or more exactly death and war as seen through children's eyes and how they try to cope with it. This movie was made in 1952 and stars Brigitte Fossey (at the time 5 y.o.), a famous actress in France.
One of those films you can't forget.
It captures the innocence and spontaneity of the children always perfectly. It's never over the top, and always rings true and authentic.
The performance of the children is stunning and the story is heartbreaking; one of the best movies on childhood, IMO.

It was apparently a hit in the US and other foreign countries when it was released. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. (Available in DVD with English subtitles).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043686/A girl of perhaps five or six is orphaned in an air raid while fleeing a French city with her parents early in World War II. She is befriended by a pre-adolescent peasant boy after she wandered away from the other refugees, and is taken in for a few weeks by his family. The children become fast friends, and the film follows their attempt to assimilate the deaths they both face, and the religious rituals surrounding those deaths, through the construction of a cemetery for all sorts of animals. Child-like and adult activity are frequently at cross-purposes, however.
