A Virginia woman was fined $535 dollars after her 11-year-old girl prevented an endangered woodpecker from being eaten by a cat.
After saving the bird, the pair bumped into a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent who issued them a fine and a threat of jail time for illegal transport of an endangered species.

They did eventually drop the charges, likely after community outrage, saying it was a miscommunication, as the mother was really intending to report the woodpecker to the proper agency. But more than likely, the poor woman didn't even know it was illegal to begin with!
