Going to the Canadian West Coast

I don't know if this is the right forum to post on, but it is a topic that is on my mind at the moment.
I will be spending the next 9 months at the Canadian west coast, trying to work out my Masters thesis in Biology. I have never been to Canada before. Now that I think about it, I remember hearing that there are many UFO sightings there (I have read on some other forums that it is more than ever before).
In any case, I dunno much about the Canada west coast and hope I will not have a too hard time to adjust there.
Has anyone of you any advice?
How is it living there?
Is it true that you have many sightings there?

What is also on my mind is that recently, on the Mysterious Universe Podcast 9.24, they have been talking about Laura's book "High Strangeness, Hyperdimensions and the Rrocess of Alien abduction".

British Columbia is a beautiful place and I hope you enjoy your visit.

on UFO sightings, who can say?

maybe you'll get lucky!

Depending how remote on the coast, adjusting should be just fine; even in the remote, it is a lovely coast with much to see.

Have a look at the John Keel threads (books too) as he had some historical context for sightings in different regions of the U.S. & Canada.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the province crystalicdream. I'm a Vancouverite, born and raised. I've lived in BC my whole life. Now I don't know if you're coming to the Vancouver area specifically, but if you're doing a Masters thesis in Biology, you've a small choice of universities, and if you're on the coast, you're further narrowed to the Lower Mainland (This is what we call Vancouver and the surrounding area) and Victoria. So I'm making an educated guess.

Vancouver has a large counterculture community, and while UFOs aren't exactly common place, they aren't all that fringe. The attitude here towards a number of typically fringe anglosphere topics is very liberal. I've seen a few, and if I go down to a bar and start talking about it with a few other locals chances are a few will pipe up and join in a casual conversation on the matter. You may get similar behavior in Victoria, but not so much the rest of the province. Vancouver and Victoria in particular run counter to the more relaxed, rural towns that litter the province.

Advice wise, make sure you are set up before you come. Not because it's hard to find a place to live, it's not. It's just expensive. The cost of living here is the highest in Canada. Life itself is nice enough. The food is of mediocre quality, generally. Better than the USA, but that's not saying much. There is a huge organic food community though, so if you put in a little effort you can get quality food at great prices.

If you want to know more specifics, ask and I will answer to the best of my ability.

Thank you so much for all the replies.
I have settled in quite nicely in the area, and am trying to get familiar with all the bus routes. What I have underestimated are the vastness of the streets, since in Germany, everything seems to be so crammed together. I live in a house with other students that all come from different countries.

Regarding UFOs, I had quite some talks with the people I am working with in the lab on that topic, and they seemed really interested, as well as the people back where I live. We had a lively discussion on what aliens are, and one guy being on the firm opinion that aliens are just demons from hell. So, you are right Wu Wei Wu, people do indeed pipe up on the topic. I wouldn't have thought they would, if I would start talking about UFOs in Germany, most people would think I am crazy.

Thanks, voyageur, I will definitely take a look at John Keel.
