ST. THOMAS — On late Monday night The Virgin Islands Consortium was informed by well-placed sources that an arrest warrant was issued for former Governor John P. de Jongh, and that he was to appear in District Court the following morning. Today, we received information that the former governor was being processed at the District Court here at the time of this writing.

The former governor was picked up at 6:00 a.m. this morning by officials of the United States Department of Justice, according to federal sources.

The Consortium contacted Government House Communications Director Kimberly Jones for more information just after 7:00 a.m. this morning, however she said she didn’t know of any such arrest. Following the arraignment at the District Court this morning, a subsequent call was placed to Ms. Jones yielding no results.

According to The Consortium’s source, the arrest appears to be a joint effort between the feds and the local government. Details pertaining to the arrest remain scant, but The Consortium is correctly working its sources.

The arrest follows the unsealing of federal documents by The Virgin Islands Consortium that revealed de Jongh’s involvement in a deeply weaved government corruption culture that has plagued the territory from one administration to the next.

The document also includes revelations about former Governor Charles W. Turnbull’s alleged involvement in corruption, who had a “bagman” during his tenure to collect and dispense monies gained illicitly. The document also sheds light on what led former Dept. of Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls, who is now Virgin Islands Housing Authority’s Director of Modernization, to report former Sen. Williams, Jr.

The Consortium will continue to update this story as more information becomes our available. We are currently working our sources.

This is rather common practice in isolated areas... be it islands, cities, protected corportations, churches etc... anywhere there is something to exploit and steal, manipulate and sell.... The system is based in money, and anything 'clean' from the start, won't stay that way long... not here in Purgatory... as per its design. The question is usually how jealous others in the area get when they don't get a piece of the pie... or if they are the upright and honorable type and being all rightous, then they are those that cause chaos and destroy the corrupt system.... for a little while.... until things start up again. So many islands in the Carib face this problem, one adminstration after the next... same in Illinois, one case of corruption after the next in the governors office or House.... so inevitable, few pay it much attention any longer... thus the need for the system to crash... too many generals and not enough indians/privates' I think is the saying. Guess we could blame this on America's 5th column of local supporters who infiltrate and destroy, requiring some 'savior' to fix it for a little while... the end of the cycle or iron age as chaos brings in the next golden one?
