Gulf of Aden

Recently, 'piracy' has been a major problem in this area. Though, I find it hard to believe that nations from all over the world would be sending dozens of warships to a single area to combat pirates.

Are pirates really the culprit here? Or is something else going on?

Are you familiar with Aaron McCollum on his "experiences" with the gulf of Aden ?
He's also discussed here http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=15949.0

Having thought about it a lot, the only reasonable explanation I can think of is that the "piracy" is state funded and could be used to target the oil tankers of specific nations. Basically, "a-symmetrical warfare" Since no single nation can determine if they might be a likely target, they all send a warship to "protect their interests".
