Happy critters means happy humans

I was was scanning through this article about the recent massive recall of American eggs. The last sentence of the article really caught my attention:

There’s never a perfect guarantee of safe food, but our odds improve dramatically when we don’t rely on industrial mass production. And when we eat an egg from happy hens, we can be pretty confident that no humans have been treated cruelly, either.

I think the same principle extends to the treatment of all livestock; and by extension, pets, wild animals, and nature in general. I suppose this falls under the category of "You shall know them by their fruits." Those who have no concern or empathy for nature probably have none for human life either.
