Harness The Earths Magnetic Poles

A Disturbance in the Force
I'm new here and dont even come close to some of the brainpower on this site...

My Hypothetical Question.

If you drilled a hole at the north and south poles of the earth, down to the core, and installed a conductor at each pole,
How much energy could be harnessed ?
Could this energy be transmitted to a grid of sattelites to operate anything useful ?

If this question is too vague or simplistic. I apoligize in advance...

Hi Mach7,

Welcome to the forum. It's usual for new members to introduce themselves in the Newbies board. It can be as little or as much as you like (read some of the posts to get an idea), but we are always interested in how folks arrive here in the Forum. Enjoy looking around. There's plenty of friendly folks to discuss your interests with!

Hi Mach7,

I'm not sure if drilling a hole through the poles and installing a conductor would do much. Given the pressures at deep levels within the mantle such a task would be impossible anyways. But even hypothetically, all you need to do is capture a potential difference which you could do by sticking a wire in the air and sticking the other end into the ground. The problem is that you need a way of getting large numbers of electrons to flow through the wire towards the ground to generate a current if you want power. Electrical power is defined by voltage (Volts) times the current (Amps). It seems that getting a potential difference is the easy part, the hard part is getting a sizable current. Telsa talked about this problem in his "Radiant Energy Device" patents.

There really is an enormous amount of electrical energy transferred from the ionosphere to the ground in the form of lightning. There are also known areas around the world such as sections of Africa and South America where lightning is very concentrated. Maybe it's possible to capture and store this electrical power for useful purposes? It would take a new sort of technological base to do it though.

Then again, I'm not sure that giving humanity more power - in it's current state - would really solve any problems. It would likely just lead to more entropy in our lives.

Btw, Welcome to the forum! :)

My thoughts on this....
Install a transformer at each pole , Diode protected of course, You wouldnt want to short out the planet.
Aim and transmit this power to sattelites near the poles, and then transferred through a grid of sattelites to complete the circuit.

All technology is double edged. Good and evil are left to those who develop and apply them.

If I were looking to develop a device to protect the planet from asteroids, comets, etc...I would look to a stable and predictable energy source to power it....

I just figured that if you could tap the earths energy you might be able to power a particle beam with enough energy to get the job done. .....All that power in one mans hand would probably be too much in this changing world.
