Help with computer issues (mac guru's appriciated)

I was under the impression that MS Office for mac came with outlook express, so you can use that for your mail anyway.
Or am I misunderstanding the issue?

Office for the Mac comes with Entourage as the mail program.

Foxx has already mentioned the best free email client for both Mac and PC platforms - Thunderbird. It works a treat, and is in my experience far superior to the MS Office email client for Mac.

Not anymore, they dropped Entourage and only support Outlook now.

You're right Anart. I am using an older version of Office for Mac... should have checked that first :-[ Office 2011 for Mac does have Outlook.

For email, office, and virtualization software, there are a lot of free options that I think are worth checking out before buying something that you may not be happy with. FWIW.

Although basically just got the Mac up and semi-completely running last night, it will be a learning curve for me. I'm not very excited about the web browser and someone had mentioned in an article that G-Chrome was very good for this system. The other thing, which has been discussed above, are email programs. The one that came with this, the basic Mac email, seems limiting. Some liked Thunderbird, and i've used this before on windows. Outlook email is what i'm accustomed with due to work, as well as what was on my old now retired system - still thinking about this aspect.

I loaded a copy of Office for Mac, just to try it out (it has entourage, so good to know anart a new copy would have outlook). Moving word documents into the system and then figuring out the file systems will take some getting used to. In office word (windows) i could have, lets say 10 or 50 documents opened and minimized without problem. With this system i had three opened and it crashed (encountered a problem), resulting in two of them being lost. Also, when copy/pasting an article for instance using safari, it would not copy the photo's; just text. I have not figured out how to change this yet to copy and then past the complete format.

Overall the machine loaded and ran very well. With some expected inexperience hiccups, and am slowly starting to orientate how to use it and it is an interesting transition from what i'm used to. There were no pesky updates to mention, other than the basic OS update. Photos worked very well, easy to view and manage, as were the music aspects that i can tell so far.

To overcome problems with copy pasting, and there are others too :), I use Firefox as my main internet program and it overcomes these problems. Both systems have their pluses and minuses in use, a combination keeps me out of trouble.

So far I've not experienced problems with having multiple documents open (at least ten), I usually keep them open in Desktop. One way around the copy phot's problem is to copy to the desktop and then copy into Word document. Please note that I'm not an expert on Mac's, just what I've found by asking and by 'playing' to get a result.

This may help, or not.

After some searching and trying out different solutions, I've found a good and convenient way to save articles:

1) Get the free 'Pocket' app for your Mac (and/or iPhone/Android): _http://getpocket.com/mac/

2) Install the Safari extension, see here: _http://getpocket.com/add
This will create a button on the Safari toolbar

3) When reading a page, just press the Pocket button in Safari. This will create a nice readable page of what you're reading and 'send' it to Pocket. The algorithm for 'cleaning up' the page is the best I've seen(compared e.g. to Readability), and it will include the images. The only thing that sometimes isn't included are comments below some article. Pocket will sync with all devices on which you have installed the program

4) If you want to create a nice PDF from the article, just choose 'print' while viewing in Pocket, and then choose the convenient 'Save as PDF' from the Mac's print window

That's it!

Well that is an interesting useful addition, and sounds like such an easy fast method, too - think i'll have to give this a test drive.

Thank you Aragorn.

Like any new system, there will be much trial and error to see what works. At present while away, i'm working off a little 6x10 screen traveling XP (very difficult on the eyes, let alone typing), so looking forward to getting back and trying these new things out.
