I work in the construction industry in Scotland.
I have just recently discovered projects underway that will introduce Commercial Biomass as a heat source (initially) to the Scottish public.
Here is what i have found out.
First off what is biomass.
Biomass will be touted as a renewable source of energy, it will somehow be classed in the same group as Wind/Tide/Wave/Solar powers.
Biomass to Joe public involves burning biologically derived products such as wood, straw or sewage sludge in pellet form to generate heat. If the biomass source is sustainable, such as wood from a forest where new trees are planted to replace felled ones, then biomass is a source of low carbon renewable energy. The ash produced we are told can be dispossed of in your garden.
Biomass to Industry involves burning bio derived products that contain animal carcasses/blood/rubber/oil to produce Electricity and Diesel. The by product is sold back to farmers to fertilise their fields.
IMO if you burn a high carbon fuel you can't renew the carbon it is gone for your lifetime. renewables such as biomass are infinite they must produce more pollution at some stage. Elsewhere the spin is that during the renewables lifetime it has consummed carbon dioxide thus negating the carbon dioxide it is about to give up when it is eventually burnt. Grasping at straws i say.
Here are three examples under construction where i live.
1. http://www.upperstrand.co.uk
THE DISTRICT HEATING CONCEPT INVOLVES A CENTRAL PLANT THAT SUPPLIES HEATING AND HOT WATER FOR THE ENTIRE DEVELOPMENT, OFFERING SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGES OVER THE TRADITIONAL SYSTEM http://www.upperstrand.co.uk/about/energy/
UPPER STRAND FEATURES THE FIRST EXAMPLE IN THE UK, PROVIDING DISCREET, STRATEGICALLY PLACED DISPOSAL POINTS THAT ALLOW DOMESTIC WASTE TO BE CONCEALED UNDERGROUND WHILE AWAITING REGULAR COLLECTION BY THE LATEST AUTOMATED VEHICLES. http://www.upperstrand.co.uk/about/waste/
2. Queen Margaret college (university??) new campus, no need for a public enquiry. http://www.edinburgharchitecture.co.uk/news%2003_dec.htm
And when the dust settled we got this..
Biomass scheme will power campus http://www.nuergy.com/news/?n=76
3. PPP projects. Lanarkshire Biomass http://www.northlan.gov.uk/your+council/news/news+archive/biomass+heat+project+boosts+environment.html
Very little public knowledge about this so far, i wonder why.
