Hyperactive Thyroid

Hello everyone. I have a question about Hyperactive Thyroid. Starting back in December I started having heart palpitations daily. Now I have had palpitations in the past, but never daily. So I started to get a little worried. I was taking magnesium and potassium now and then, and I realized that when I did, it made it worse. So I stopped taking those.
I also chew Nicorette, and that seemed to make it worse so I stopped that also. Well they weren't getting much better, so I thought perhaps the ketogenic diet had something to do with it, so I went back to the paleo diet for now.
Well yesterday I went to the clinic and they did an EKG that came out fine. Then they hooked me up to the holter heart monitor that I wore for 24 hours and recorded in a journal episodes I had. Took it back to them today.
They of course took blood, and today the nurse called me and said that I have an overactive thyroid. I now have an appointment with a cardiologist next week, and the endocrinologist the end of February.

This is continued from above because I can't figure out how to get this to let me type a larger amount of text.
So looking over my supplements I see that my vitamin D also has Sea Iodine in it. 667% of your daily allowance. Do you think that this could have been what threw my thyroid out of whack? I have never had thyroid problems in the past. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks for listening

Maybe you could talk a bit more about your diet? Like what you're eating now, what you were eating before, etc. Thyroid issues have been discussed in either the Life Without Bread thread or the Ketogenic Diet thread (or it may have been discussed in both). Have you read those threads?

The iodine typically does this, especially if the root of the thyroid problem is autoimmune. Once your thyroid "cools" down, iodine is usually no longer a problem.

Did you end up receiving chemotherapy or anything related?

You have to be extremely careful with hidden sources of gluten. I recently learned that reheating your food in an oven where gluten foods where reheated previously, can trigger an autoimmune response.

I would try going back to keto but without the iodine supplementation, at least as a test. Who knows, maybe by the time you see the endocrinologist, your thyroid gland will settle down.

Hi Psyche, thanks for taking the time to answer me. I will admit that around Christmas I had some gluten. It was the first time in about 2 years that I let myself do that. I am very disappointed in myself, and afterwards I felt like hell for a good couple of weeks.
I have never had chemo or radiation when I had cancer, so that isn't a factor. I have already started transitioning back to the Keto diet, made a batch of bone broth and have cut out the veggies.
I am hoping that by the time I do go see the endocrinologist my thyroid will have calmed down enough not to need any kind of treatment. Fingers crossed.
Next week I go to the cardiologist to go over my results from the monitor they had me wear for 24 hours. I am a little nervous because I have never been to the heart doctor, and I don't want to have to take any medications. The palpitations have settled down a bit too.

Thanks again Psyche for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it.

Hashimoto's or autoimmune thyroid problems are typically related with gluten intolerance. Don't despair and remember that gluten is pure poison that looks enticing like a poisoned apple.

Cardiologists are infamous for prescribing drugs. If anything make sure to understand what they are offering to you. You could argue that you rather treat the root of the problem with the endocrinologist rather than having drugs that have side effects like lack of energy and fatigue (beta blockers to slow down the heart rate for instance). There are friendly supplements for your heart like magnesium, omega 3s, CoQ10, L-carnitine that work very well in dealing with palpitations.

The autoimmune response may take 6 months to settle down. Be patient and consistent and good with yourself, and be very careful with hidden sources of gluten.

Remember to avoid all sources of iodine for now and make sure your salt doesn't have it either.

I think the ketogenic diet will help a lot.

Thanks again for your kind response..what you have said has eased my mind and helped me to form a plan. I definitely don't want to take any heart medication, so I will discuss waiting until my endocrinologist appointment and go from there.

I had been taking Omega 3's and magnesium, but stopped when I didn't know what the heck was causing my problem. My question is, how much of each of those should I take?

Thanks for your time :)

One other thing...2 years ago I had a surgical hysterectomy. Could this have anything to do with my thyroid issue?

I would take some 2 to 4 of both Omega 3s and Magnesium. Remember to always take your bone broth.

Did you had vitamin C in IV? If you are in the U.S., this treatment is widely available. It is something you might want to consider if you didn't do it. At least to balance up your immune system and help you out after all you've been through.

For the thyroid problem, I still think the logical sequence of events is gluten - autoimmune attack - thyroid problems. A hard lesson indeed, we let our guards down and the attack comes back with revenge.

Now that you are strictly gluten-free, your antibodies against the thyroid might come back negative, giving your thyroid a much needed chance to recover.

I have not had Vitamin C in IV, but I do regularly put the powdered vitamin C in water and drink it. I have at least a teaspoon a day lately and my body is using all of it. It has helped keep me from catching all the sickness going around work also.

Thanks for the information on the supplements. I had been taking before only one of each, but I will start taking 2 each.
I totally agree with you about the gluten..it is amazing how detrimental this stuff is. Have a great day Psyche.

Just a little update...last week I had a scan of my thyroid so they could see what was causing it to be hyper.. I got the results today from the doctor and he said that it is most likely iodine induced hyperthyroidism and it will clear up in 2-3 months. I have been on the keto diet now again since I found out it was hyper, and I just received the liposomal vitamin C I ordered.

Thank you Psyche....you were right and I have learned a great lesson..not even a little bit of gluten can be tolerated. I am feeling better now and the palpitations have slowed up quite a bit.

While you are hyper, be careful of added sources of iodine. Good to hear you are on the recovering path.

Well here we are almost at the end of March...and I must say that my heart palpitations have all but stopped..Yay! I go in next week and have my blood drawn to check my thyroid levels. I am sure that they have dropped.

Thank you Psyche for your advice regarding this. I have been very good about not eating foods with iodine and that has been helpful. My doctor didn't even mention this. I know that I forgot once or twice and had something with Iodine in it, and my palpitations went crazy.

I have also been taking the COq10, magnesium, DLPA, and Omega 3 2x a day and that has been a tremendous help as well.
