I just saw this movie last night and I think it is worth watching as light entertainment.
Sure enough the basics of the plot are lame as usual in Hollywood blockbusters but it's still quite an exciting movie to watch.
Interesting depiction of post apocalyptic world ( scientists modify the virus in order to cure the cancer but the virus mutates further and turns into a strain that wipes out most of the population. Whoever is not killed is turned into a creature that behaves like rabid animal and is sensitive to sunlight. Those who are immune find themselves to be a prey for rabid nocturnal humanoids).
I thought Will Smith's performance was quite ok, and I enjoyed his canine co-star.
The movie does touch on some important issues but in very superficial way. Nevertheless it managed to keep me on the edge of the seat for most of the time.

Saw it some time ago, and thought it wasn't bad....but nothing much of substance in the end.
However, I then discovered that there was an alternative ending. The alternative ending was what the director intended....and frankly it set the entire movie in a completely different light!! It wasn't used in the end because "the audience wouldn't get it". Took me about half an hour after watching it to finally 'get it'. :P
So if you do get a chance to watch it, the DVD version included both endings....I recommend seeing both ending for the contrast between the two.

SPOILER WARNING!

Really? I hated the movie. I found it rather boring/depressing, attached myself to the dog character and when he died I was like "that's it!" and turned it off.

It was awhile ago so I can't recall much more then it making me really upset.

I'm glad you posted this because I saw very little of the movie (I don't like zombie type stuff and this reminded me of that), but thought that the dog didn't make it. Those two things were enough to make me not want to watch it.

That being said, my impressions could be completely wrong (regarding the zombie aspect) as I really didn't see enough of it.

I thought the movie was okay. Pretty standard zombie movie I'd say. Will Smith wasn't spectacular but did the job. I too found myself attached to the dog and was sad that he had to go. I'm really curious about that alternate ending though - might have to rent the dvd again!

The dog was a she in fact :)

*****SPOILER ALERT !!!!*****

As for the alternate ending since I didn't see the official dvd - maybe I ve seen the alternate version.

In version I saw he dies defending the mother and the child, and then they make it to the compound in Vermont with a vial of the serum from the cured zombie woman.
Is this the official version or alternate ?

That is the official one, the alternate ending is more interesting imo, you can also check it out on youtube, no need to rent the dvd.

Thanks for the link. Good thing I didn't have to see it all over again.
I have to say, even this ending is equally lame. I mean what really happened, and how come rabid creatures have so much sense?

But as I said, the only value of this movie is as light entertainment - therefore this alternate ending is way more pleasing then the official one.
