I am starting a TEFL Diploma Program.

The Living Force
It took 40 years to revisit what I originally wanted to do as tertiary studies, study English Language. This program is about Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It is not a degree in English Language and Literature as I originally wanted, but it is a start, a jumpstart.
Just a bit of background, in University, I did not study Germanic Languages because of my family pressure. I went to Geology and Geophysical Engineering instead, which was another much disliked subject of study for my family (all economists and accountants). I still love the work and the knowledge that comes with it but work is currently a bit thin which gives me time. Going for the TEFL diploma was my elder's daughter idea and so, here I am, happy like a pig in the mud!
I look forward for the challenge(s) ahead.

Exactly. And if you have some time left you could just read English literature for fun, before going to bed for example. Also, I am wondering whether they have changed the curriculum at universities and whether you will still be allowed to study the classic novels, or whether the SJWs at the top of the universities have eradicated all these 'racist' and 'sexist' books. Don't know, maybe it's worth finding out, what books are part of the programme before you embark on the next adventure!

Good for you (and your daughter)! Enjoy!

I wish you all the best for your learning journey. And is great that your family (daughter) know you so well and support in your decision. It is great to use your free time for something that you have been interested in for so long and you can surely shape it to your interests and discover new aspects along the way. And maybe this is just the right time. Good luck to you!

Good for you Ina, this sounds so inspiring and creative, a good thing for these times. You have me thinking about online study all of a sudden, like I don't have enough going already! Learning IS FUN! Such a good thing to pursue a subject you've always wanted to study even though its a bit different then your original interest. Who know where this could lead, so exciting!

Best wishes for your further learning, @Ina! Kudos to you for going back to learn what you wanted to. You can always read classical English literature from the English cannon, and if you’re ever interested in the history of English, these podcasts in this post by Adaryn are great to listen to:

Congratz Ina. I remember looking at TEFL programs for awhile before I was sort of persuaded to go to college instead, for... geophysics! Maybe we were drinking the same koolaid growing up :-). I would love to hear how it goes because it's something I've always wanted to try since I was a teenager.

I did this course a while back in Oxford, UK. It was hard work, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed analysing grammar and sentence structures, because I like puzzles and because it gave me a sense of order in a chaotic world.

I also love teaching. As well as learning classroom management, eliciting (you’ll be hearing that word a lot) as much as possible from your students, it’s important to make lessons memorable and entertaining. If you ever need any tips or lesson resources, let me know, as I’m on a teaching break.

Since the demand for English lessons is still great, you won’t have problems finding work. At least I have not had problems. At least, a good teacher will always be in demand. The only thing I didn’t like was that I never had colleagues, so I found it a bit lonely sometimes.

Good luck and have fun!
