in memory of JFK/RFK/MLK/Lennon - my fist ever attempt at programming music!

Iconoclast

Jedi Master
after about 1 year of trying to learn a digital audio workstation (DAW) in my spare time, i finally present to you, dear SOTT'ers, my first-born song!

disclaimer: i have NO musical education, but i am an avid listener. ;)
judge for yourself if that's good or bad :D

specs:
- no ready-made loops were used
- all voice-samples dug up and ripped by me
- total time spent: 100+ hours

it was quite a bit of work, so if you want to listen to the song, please don't do it on crappy laptop speakers - use headphones or decent speakers, but most important of all: PUMP UP THE VOLUME!!!
:D

(if you unzip the file, it will automatically create a subfolder with mp3, cover and readme file)

enjoy!

feedback/criticism is always appreciated!!

Well I listened on my mac built in speakers and if it sounds this good then through my studio monitors it is going to be awsome. Sorry did not have anything else to listen throug to hand.

Really good work man.

I am slowly putting together a podcast internet radio show for the 8th december to mark the assassination of Lennon and i would love to include this in the program. Or use it as pre advert for the podcast .May I?

Which music program did you use?

Wow, good job dude! I can't believe that you've never done music before.

I kept waiting for a final "bang!" in the end, but it never came... :D

thanks for the kind words, guys!

Away With The Fairys: yeah, sure - feel free to use it! as long as it is non-commercial, it's all good! :D
(if you want to credit me, use "Al O'Nenut" and not "Iconoclast", and make sure to post a link to the podcast here, so i can check it out)

i used FL Studio - after trying out a bunch of others (reaper was also very good, might switch to it in the future)

I just listened to it once, and my impression:

Good job! Powerful message, and sounds quite professional.

I am creeped out by the title, "Assassination Dance" though! (But that is just me - no big deal!)

Must have felt good to get the creative juices flowing and make a worthwhile message at the same time, right?

Thank you for sharing this!

yeah, the title was "Assassination Blues" for the longest time, but i wanted to communicate that it is electronic/dance music not some sad blues ;)
and "Assassination Blues (Dance Mix)" sounded lame. :D

when i started putting it together, i decided i needed to pack some sort of message/information into the music i make - there is already more than enough music without it.

i call it "danceable knowledge" ;)

as soon as my wrist heals (Tenosynovitis - i've been hampered by it for 2-3 months) i'll slowly start putting together the next one.
it'll most likely be on psychopathy.

Wow excellent track Iconocast :cool2: Really sweet lead synth and the samples all sound excellent. Why no bass tho?! I really liked the lead that comes in 2.15, if that was transposed down a few octaves could it make the beginnings of an excellent bassline, maybe?

Yeah very nice, reminds me of FSOL or Orbital'ish.. which (imo) a good thing!

thanks for the feedback, Stevie & Parallax!

yeah, the bassline is rather simple, i wasn't yet advanced enough to make it better. next time, though!

and FSOL and orbital comparisons are a big compliment! :D

Just heard it, great job. Thanks for posting this. Are you releasing it?

Prouty's lone nut comment in there works wonders.. ALthough it's hard to tell how someone who isn't "in the know" about these things would process this. Perhaps adding more murder victims (Robert Kennendy for instance) would add to strengthen the lone nut part.

Really good job!

thanks, Mechanic!
well, i'm "releasing" it by posting it here and maybe some other places and mailing it to friends.

a video with images that go with the samples would be nice, but it's highly unlikely that i'll find the time. plus i'm no video-editing wiz.

the RFK murder IS in there! :-)
in the beginning right after he announces MLK's shooting you can hear a live recording from the ambassador(?) hotel where he was killed and the official announcement follows. ;)

i don't know how someone 'uninitiated' would react to this, but it is very hard to understand how different people listen to music anyway. a friend of mine never listens to lyrics or samples, just to the music.

my goal was to create a song that even when listened to only once, would at least make the audience remember all those "lone nut" murders. maybe kick off some thinking processes in some.
anything else is bonus.
