Massive Freight Train Toppled Due to Texas Flooding as 20 Inches of Rain Fall in Places
https://gma.yahoo.com/massive-freight-train-toppled-due-texas-flooding-20-183125238--abc-news-topstories.html

Two crew members were rescued today from a freight train that was derailed by heavy rain and flash flooding near Corsicana, Texas, according to Union Pacific Railroad, an area that saw more than 19 inches of rain.

The demonstration of the force of nature came as torrential rains drenched Texas, with two counties getting more than 20 inches of rain since the storm began. And the end may not be in sight as an additional foot of rain was possible in parts of Eastern Texas, forecasters said.

Powell, in Navarro County, got at least 20.15 inches and Coolidge, in Limestone County, got 20 inches. Rainfall records were broken for San Antonio, Waco and Dallas for daily totals.

The train, which was carrying cement, had been heading southward around 3:30 a.m. when the conductor noticed water starting to come over the tracks, according to Jeff DeGraff, director of corporate media relations for Union Pacific Railroad.

Degraff told ABC News that the conductor "was able to safely stop the train in a high-water area due to flash flooding of a nearby creek," and he and another crew member "evacuated and were subsequently picked up by a Navarro County water rescue team."

Shortly after the two crew members escaped the train, 46 of the train's 54 cars were knocked over by the floodwaters several feet high, DeGraff said. Fortunately, "the two men are both doing fine and both escaped uninjured," he added.

Remnants of moisture from Hurricane Patricia, which weakened into a tropical depression late Saturday morning, is expected to "exacerbate" the current heavy rain from a separate front, NOAA meteorologist Dennis Feltgen told ABC News today.

_http://www.abc15.com/news/national/32-train-cars-derail-spill-closes-down-state-route-118-in-new-mexico

GALLUP, NM - There was a train derailment of the BNSF Railway east of Gallup, New Mexico on Friday morning, closing down State Route 118.

32 cars were derailed at the Southfork Bridge that crosses north to Red Rock State Park spilling liquid asphalt. Hazmat crews determined the spill was non-toxic.

“This derailment is certainly unfortunate. However, we trust that the New Mexico Environment Protection Agency (EPA) will be diligent in making sure that anything spilled is not hazardous to the environment or to people,” said The Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye. “EPA must be forthright in this situation as many of our Navajo people live along the railway.”

Route 118, otherwise known as Old Route 66, is back open but residents from Pinedale or Church Rock are advised to use Superman Canyon Road or Becenti Trail is necessary.

No people were reported to have been injured in the derailment.

2nd train derails in Wisconsin in 2 days, spills crude oil
http://www.chron.com/business/energy/article/Train-derailment-spilled-thousands-of-gallons-of-6618225.php

WATERTOWN, Wis. (AP) — A Canadian Pacific Railway train carrying crude oil derailed Sunday and prompted some evacuations in Wisconsin, the second day in a row a freight train derailed in the state. The eastbound CP train derailed about 2 p.m. in Watertown, in the southeastern part of the state. The railroad said at least 10 cars derailed, and some were leaking. No fires or injuries were reported. CP was sending teams to the site. The company did not say how much oil spilled. Federal investigators and hazardous material specialists are on their way to the scene, the Federal Railroad Administration said in a tweet. Residents of about 35 homes were asked to evacuate around 4 p.m., said Donna Haugom, director of the Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management.

On Saturday, a freight train derailed near Alma in western Wisconsin, spilling thousands of gallons of ethanol. BNSF Railway said crews continued Sunday to transfer ethanol from the derailed cars and get the cars back on the tracks. The BNSF train derailed at 8:45 a.m. Saturday about two miles north of Alma, a town along the Mississippi River. Some of the 25 derailed cars were empty auto racks and tanker cars. BNSF said railroad crews stopped the leaks from five tanker cars and placed containment booms along the shoreline. One tanker released an estimated 18,000 gallons of ethanol, and the other four released an estimated 5 to 500 gallons each. No one was hurt. BNSF said it expects the tracks to return to service Monday morning.

Third Freight Train Derails (Second Owned By Buffett) Days After Obama Kills Keystone Pipeline
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-11-09/third-freight-train-derails-second-owned-buffett-days-after-obama-kills-keystone-pip

Monday Nov. 9, 2015 - On Saturday, we noted with great irony, that just a day after Obama - with great pomp and even more preaching - killed the Keystone XL pipeline, that a freight train with 32 cars, belonging to Warren Buffett's BNSF, had derailed north of Alma, Wisconsin prompting several road closures and a voluntary evacuation of the affected area.

Then on Sunday, barely 24 hours later, in another Wisconsin derailment incident, a train, this time with 100-car, carrying crude oil, derailed near the intersection of S. Montgomery St. and West St. in Watertown on Sunday afternoon. The Mayor said the derailment happened around 2:00 p.m. While this train did not belong to BNSF but to Canadian Pacific Railroad instead, that was hardly comforting to the people. The spokesperson said 13 cars tipped over, one of which was punctured and oil.

And then, moments ago in what we initially thought was a joke, KCRG reported that close to two dozen train cars derailed after a crash Monday morning. Lt. Brett Grimshaw of the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened a little after 8 a.m. when a coal train hit a road grader that had been backed up onto the tracks.

And before you ask, yes, this train, too, belongs to BNSF, which in turn belongs to Warren Buffett,

BNSF railroad spokesman Andy Williams said two locomotives and 21 of the 135 cars being pulled derailed near mile marker 249 of Highway 34, which is between Danville and New London close to the Henry County line.

The grader was backed up onto the rails while doing repairs on Highway 34 and didn’t see the train coming, Grimshaw said. The grader’s operator was thrown about 40 feet by the impact of the crash and was checked by paramedics. No injuries were reported, Grimshaw said.

Williams said the two tracks at the site are out of service until the spilled coal is removed and any track repairs are finished.

Today, you can make that 3 oil trains in the past 8 months, and now add one coal train to the mix.

Seven people are confirmed dead and 11 injured after a high speed train caught fire and derailed in Strasbourg.
The test train came off the tracks outside Eckwersheim, near Strasbroug, and plunged into a river.

Dramatic pictures on social media showed the train upended and partially submerged in the water.

There has not been any link established with the Paris attacks.

A witness, a teenage girl having a lesson at a nearby riding school, told Dernieres Nouvelles A’Alsace (DNA) she saw the train catch fire and then overturn. It is believed the train may have struck a nearby bridge before catching fire.Emergency services have been deployed to the scene.

Pictures from the scene showed the locomotive partly submerged in a canal alongside the tracks with other parts lying broken and detached in a field beside the track.

French Environment Minister Segolene Royal was en route to the crash scene, the prefecture said.

Emergency services have been deployed and those injured airlifted to nearby hospitals.

Medical units including police divers were spotted at the scene.

It is believed the crash occurred during a test run of the TGV train when the vehicle gained “excessive speed” according to sources speaking to AFP.
