The explosion took place on the Iraqi side of the border, in the country's Anbar province, which is facing an ISIL insurgency. Several nearby buildings as well as the checkpoint itself were damaged by the explosion.
Despite an Iraqi government's continuing offensive against the group, Islamic State militants launched an attack Wednesday in Iraq’s western Anbar province.
On Friday evening, the group killed a senior Iraqi army commander as well as three officers in a suicide attack.
